Hi! i'm using XP Home and I am having problems with my DVD drive. The DVD drive I have is a Samsung SD-616F.
It was working fine and all of a suddern it has just died out. I think this maybe a problem with my motherboard or the drives cable. The drive will not read any sort of media the light just blinks a couple of times when any type of media is inserted and thats it
What I wanted to know is would anything or a setting in XP cause this to happen and if so how can I resolve it.
Thanks

it could very well have died ,,,or got v.dirty ,,,prob best bet is to connect it WITH the cable to another machine ,,,if no work try another cable ,,etc
rather than muckin your xp setup up ,,,if dirty , u can try some alcohol (not becks) on the lens , using a baby bud ,,,don,t use a s/driver ,,,,and retry ,,,,
good luck
EDIT: if u have a win98 cd-rom try settin bios to boot from cd-rom - c - etc and see if it will boot ,,,,,stop it once it,s started or not.

Or perhaps the xp disk? the 98 one will do it...:D
Xp ain't just lost the drive has it ? Can you see it in my computer & does it show in device manager? If it doesn't show there then use action, scan for device changes & hopefully it will re-find it......
However do like freddy says and use a bootable CD, whatever flavour!, to see if the unit is just plain dead......

XP has a little problem with upper and lower filters on these things... here (http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q270008) take a look - I know it says 2000 - the link to xp is there too

Also, My Samsung DVD-Rom overheats and claps out of DVD reading but is fine with CD's so its getting replaced, just wondering if your drive did this before it stopped working.

Hi! I tired what you suggested and booted from a 98 disk and XP Disc but had no luck. I have used another IDE cable and have also switched my drive to a different chanel on the motherboard and i'm still having the same problems.
So its looks to me that the drive has died out.
Thanks
