Bad .cab file when tring to install OS

My computer recently ate the big one and all I can do is boot from a floppy. I use my windows98 startup disk and start w/cd support. When I pop in my windows98 cd and run setup it always starts out fine, but gives me the error message of bad .cab file when trying to install. This has happened several time and never happens at the same point in the setup process that it did the last time. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

Sounds like a) motherboard is dying (or at list the IDE controller) or b) CD-ROM is dying. Since your other post said that Win was having a problem seeing the drive and wanted drivers (and it should never, unless it's a scsi drive) I'd go for replacing the CD-ROM. Try running the CD as secondary IDE master and see if that solves the problem. If it does, consider a new mobo. If it doesn't try a new CD-ROM.

According to one of the TechTips on this site, if you get the message "Setup could not decompress CAB files", 99% of the time it means an incorrectly jumpered motherboard, selecting the wrong voltage setting for you CPU, or bad ram memory. I would check all of these...

Or it is bad cache on the motherboard. But most likely bad ram. Could also explain why your system crashed. Unless it is a cyrix chip, and then that is where I would look first. Also be sure to make sure you cpu fan is okay. If it is dead or dying then it is crashing when it overheats.

It is eather Bad RAM or CACHE....
