XP Error on install

I am installin XP Fresh.... I low level formated the HDD with IBM's utility. Started XP install, formatted with NTFS, going through the install after putting in name, cd key, time zone, etc....I get this message:

"A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

What does this mean??? I restarted and get the same...

it sounds like your file system is messed up....but i might be wrong...

why did you do a low level format?

<me wonders> if you got some messed up sectors

you're not going to be able to sabe this install...my suggestion is to do a format. not a low level but a normal, high level full format....

A few thoughts

Remove the 3com nic... seen 3com's mess up many an install, not just xp... which hp cdrw?

Do you mean a low level format or do you mean a zero fill?

Run the ibm diagnostics to make sure you have no bad sectors.

Boot from the cd, let the setup run, go into repair console and type fixboot and then fixmbr

HP CD12 Series....I did the format using the IBM Utility (DFT) "Erase Disk". I will reformat again , check for bad sectors and try without the NIC Card. Thanks

One of the previous posts is probably right, this install is corrupt. IF IBM diagnostic finds nothing then test your RAM.
Bad RAM corrupts files and file systems quite frequently.
