Win XP Problems (suprise)

Hey guys got this ibm thinkpad 900 mhz with win xp home on it, the problem is, power flickered, it rebooted and now all it does is get halfway through the XP boot screen and then you get the BSOD memory dump etc. it wont boot into safe mode, or last know good config mode, all modes do the same thing. Then only thing I know do to is to reinstall win xp. is there another way around this???? Maybe like win 98 where you could do a registry restore, although that was through dos.....

Boot to the CD, repair console, and try fixboot, that failing try fixmbr. If neither of those work, try chkdsk /r.

If none of that works, try the second repair option.


If THAT does not work, re-install the damm OS! ;)

Into which directory. It warns you if you reinstall over itself you may lose my docs, etc. if you install to a new directory your programs won't work

I'm betting he won't have to do it........chkdsk /r is usually as far as you have to go......

As for losing docs, etc................well, it don't work at all now.

And usually you don't lose much.

I reckon back-up is the key......;)

If you leave "my documents" in documents and settings / user profile, they will no longer be accessible.

ALWAYS move my documents to somewhere sensible - that and outlook express...people get caught everytime trying to find those.

Gee, So obvious I never thought of it. Move my docs to like the root of c? then if I have to reinstall over I won't lose them? Thats a good tip.

Thanks for your help guys, will give all of those suggestions a try, turns out that the customer lost her cd, so it will be tommorrow before she has a new one. Appreciate the tips :cool:

Errr... is there any way to move my default outlook express folder? or do I need to occasionally copy my .dbx to another folder to do this?

Techs, I move my documents, mail, favourites, cookies, temp inet files etc etc to another partition - that way I can safely reghost the c: and not worry because the registry already knows where they are.

As for moving outlook express files - tools, options maintenance, store folde,r and choose the folder (that must already exist)

thanks for the help on the Outlook express. I never saw that option. As to the my docs, favorites etc I never realized if I moved my favorites folder that windows knew they were moved and would look for them in the new place. I just tried it and it works. Mucho Thanks.

You are right you cannot change the location - but you can export them to my documents - which I do each time I add a new one. Same is true of the oe address book.

I wonder if it can be changed in the registry - may have a play with that later when I sorted out my little Process_has_locked_pages caused by lame.exe :rolleyes:

I just tried moving may Favorites folder to the root of C: and Windows and Internet Explorer knows it is moved. it still works and it still allows me to add favorites.

Save yourself the trouble and download the power toys from MS, specifically TweakUI. Under the My Computer section you'll find a a tweak for special folders, here you can change the location of folders from the CD Burning folder to My Documents to Favorites and several others.
