connecting to the net on its own

hello

in windows xp i have a prob

at random times, only while logged in tho, the computer automatically connects to the net

but i always click cancel, but when playing games it is a prob

i have done the usual, like check for viruses and uncheck everything in msconfig

i even installed a firewall and made it disallow all network acivity and it still connects!!

i have no spyware (i used ad-aware)

i haven't bothered reinstalling xp pro cause i had this same prob in windows me (but i think that was the kluz virus)

What type of internet connection do you use?..dial-up or high speed?
how often does it try to connect?
In outlook express, under tools/options/ on the general tab, under the box that asks how often you want to check for messages, do you have it set to "do not connect" if the computer is not connected at this time?

it was already set to that setting

i am using dial-up

and it trys to connect mostly at random

but if you turn the comp on and just wait it takes about 20 min for it to show up, and by then im 10 min into a good game!!!

Well, assuming you don't have a p2p file sharing software installed, or anything like PCAnywhere, The two things I would suspect are either something in one of your games, some kind of program like messenger, or, more likely, a trojan that isn't being detected by your antivirus. If you haven't already done so, do an online virus scan..then try a trojan detector (here:)

Wait for it.
Let it dial in.
Let it try to connect.
You now know what it is as the firewall should go off and tell you.

i tryed exactly that! the thing is nothing made a connection to the net once it was connected!!

i have never used windows' update
and i have automatic updated disabled (i am paranoid)

as we speak i am downloading the trojan detector....

Is this 1 game in particular or any game or any time in general that it tries to connect?

What firewall? If zone alarm be sure to set both settings to high and check off the boxes for servers to see if anything is connecting. Or, is that what you did?

What did you install recently?

What OS - what programs are running in the background?

my firewall shows no activity!!!

and in the background i am running these at startup:

3deep
point32
AVG anit-virus
and 3DFX Manager

btw that game is quake 3 and i have run it on other oses on this same comp with no auto dial

and i am using tiny personal firewall on windows xp

I've seen similar activity on a Win9x machine where the password had been "memorized" into the dialup settings.

Have you tried to remove your identification (name/password) from the dialup client?

Thats not a problem its a feature that left me scratching my head. If I remember right if go to the properties of the internet connection, on one of the tabs thier is an option for dialup on demand. Thats how to stop it.

Two more thoughts, one of those bugs can blind ZA, the other is, is this a host for ics? Does your ICS allow dialling on demand from the other pcs?
