I am at a loss here a friend has the game and when he tries to run it, it reboots his computer, he says he has all the patches and we updated the video driver. and we have reinstalled the game, it is running XP home, any ideas?

that's a fairly "taxing" game. could be indicitive of a underlying hardware problem that doesn't show up under normal conditions like surfing because the component isn't being stressed enough to fail.

just had that happen on my home system. The sims kept locking up. clean install, different OS, made no difference. eventually found a bad cpu, which was only showing up in the sims because (my best guess) of all the utilization of direct draw. I could play jedi knight for hours (which used more of the video card and OpenGL) with no problems.

just one of many, many possibilities.

- edit -
reboots often times are PSU and memory related.

i seriously wouldnt doubt if it were a video card flaw like kato suggested, or possibly even some sort of wierd conflict with certain video cards. I was able to play fine (albeit a little laggy) on a voodoo 3 pentium II machine, but my nice new xp 1.8ghz geforce 4 ti4200 runs with uber graphics glitches. my friend with an identical system except for a geforce 4 mx of some number can run it fine. what video card do you have btw?

I had loads of probs with this game & stability. Make sure you use the 'setup' proggie in the lionhead directory after its installed, make sure you use either 16 or 32 million colours not 24, & make sure the resolution is lower or equal to your desktop & not some weird value so 640x480 or 800x600 or 1024x768.... If you have both direct x and opengl drivers available use directx.

Oh choose minimum detail to start with, all those shaders & reflections send it into overdrive.....
