I am trying to set up a TCP/IP printer port on a Windows 98 machine. My tech guy said I need a download called TCP/IP printer. Does anyone know where this is?

Thanks

What is the make and model of printer or are you using a printserver like a jetdirect?

Win98 doesn't include a TCP/IP port to select when installing printers, however the driver CD's installer program for the printer should give you that option.

if it's an HP printer they have an app to do this. Finding it on the site is not easy. I have it at home (i'm at work at the moment) if you need it post back and I can e-mail it to you or put it up on my web site.

The printer is a printer on our Toshiba copier. It is hooked up to my network and we use it for large print jobs. On my Windows XP & Windows 2000 machines, I was able to create a TCP/IP port, and I am told that on my Windows 98 machines that I should be able to do the same thing. If I can't get it to work, I can run the print jobs through the server, but it is my understanding that it will be faster if I print directly to the copier.

98 can't natively perform IP printing. You must use a 3rd party solution. HP's JetAdmin will work just fine, to setup a JetDirect port. It should work even with your printer...

See here: HP JetAdmin for Windows (http://www.hp.com/cposupport/indexes1/jawins.html)

Sh!t, that link is dead. Sorry, you are going to have to search HP for it, otherwise, find someone that has one of the CD's...

What is the model number of the copier? Hate to be a stickler for details, but it will help us find info and drivers to see if the installer program for the drivers gives you a tcp/ip option.

For example we have a Cannon Image Runner 210 on our network with a NIC that can be setup as tcp/ip with drivers from the manufacturer's site.

Win2K and NT use Windows TCP/IP printing service to create virtual print ports based on the devices IP address and device name. Previuos posts are correct in that you need a third party LPR Port Spooler to create the port. If you can't get the HP one to work, you can use WINLPR spooler or ACITS spooler. Both are easily found via a web browser.

We used a prog called IP-P2P to connect to network printers, but they were all Ricoh's...not sure if it would work on any other type printer, but I believe that prog is readily available.

I would highly recommend a piece of software called acits lpr remote printing. It's a bugger to find and download but it's well worth the effort.

It basically gives you an LPR port in Windows 95/98/me to print to using an ip address and printer name. I cannot rate it highly enough, it is small, very very efficient and easy to use.
