Ok I think I might be ready to move to XP. I guess I need someone to give me a little push. My current specs:

Amd 1600
VIA KT266 MB
512 MB DDR
Geforce 4 ti4200
SB Audigy XGamer
Win ME (I plan on clean installing XP)

Ok my concerns lie in compatibility with my games. I am a heavy gamer..AA, SIms, Madden, Rainbow 6, Need for Speed, etc.....Does XP fully support most of these games now?

My main reason for wanting to upgrade is for system stability. My system has become unstable and I figure if I am gonna format and start over I might as well take the plunge to XP.

Let me know your opinions especially if you play a lot of games on XP.

Do you have an xp cdrom or a friend who does?

Easy way to check is to insert the cd rom with windows at desktop, and when it autoruns you get an option to run a compatibility test... it will search through your proggies and give you a list of stuff it can't handle or knows that need patching.

Alternatively make a list of the games you cannot live without and then go to the websites for those games and see if they need patches or have problems running.

If you have the harddrive capacity, I would suggest partitioning the drive and perform a dual boot with 98. You should install 98 first, then XP to a different partition.

What size to make these partitions is entirely up to what you intend to do with each of them, and which file systems you use. Remember, XP can see FAT32 and NTFS, where Win98 can only see FAT32, so if you expect to use all partitions in all OS’s you will be bound to FAT32.

Make Win98 solely for games, then run the bulk of your apps from XP. You may find all of your games run fine in XP, but if one doesn’t meet your expectations, you can reboot to 98 without flinching. If you install XP only, you don’t have this option.

I vote go for it, I have yet to come across a program (save for an old version of adaptecs POS buring software) that does not work with windows XP either natively or when put into compatibility mode. I am a heavy gamer as well and I think its worth it. Nothing more frustrating than getting into a good game of UT and being up by 50 or so and having your machine crash :mad:

I dunno what games you are running .... but I have a long list that won't run .... :sad: , so I have dual boot :rolleyes: :D !

Thanks for all the responses. I mainly play UT, Rainbow 6, Americas Army, Madden NFL, Sims Online. I would rather not do a dual boot config if I can do without. I have 2 - 80 GB hdd. Would like to see a list of some sort of games that will not work with XP. Thanks again.

I have not yet seen a definitive list. You will have to go to the website for each of your games and read the faqs.
