For some reason the gateway setting will not set. I set it using the GUI and it is in there but when I go to use the gateway, no go. I set the gateway in the command route add 0.0.0.0 10.1.16.100 and still no go. I deleted all the dll's in reference to microsoft networking and all of its components including dhcp tcp/ip and more and reinstalled them from the 98 cd and still no go. I re-installed windows in the same dir and no go. I installed windows in a different dir and still no go. I re-installed the nic drivers with known good drivers and no go. I replaced all winsock components with the ones on the 98 cd and still no go. I am going crazy trying to figure this out! The funny thing is the internal network works fine but the external or internet connection is where I am having the problem. The other machines on the network can use the internet just fine with no problems. All the settings are triple verified. Could it be as simple as a bad nic?

You are assuming the Default Gateway is not saving your information.
I doubt if you assumption is correct.
If you want to use the web, you also need to set up DNS.
Can you ping the Gateway? Can you ping the DNS server?

Actually my assumption is right. I know it sounds weird but it is true, trust me. I swapped out the nic and everything seems hunky dory. To answer the questions:
1 - yes I could ping the gateway.
2 - no I could not ping the dns server from that particular computer, even though every other computer worked just fine on the LAN. and yes I triple checked the settings for the internet on the computer and they were correct.
I know I should have swapped out the nic in the first place but I did not think that would be the problem and plus I did not have one on hand untill now.
Thank you though:D

Wow - So you are saying u swapped out the old NIC and everything worked fine?
That is a new one to me - I'll have to remember that in case it ever happens to me!
Glad everything is cool now.
