Anti-virus software running in the background ????
Manytimes anti-virus software will make the mouse act crazy....
Have you updated it lately?
Did the problem start about then, if so maybe the next update will solve the mouse problem....

Maybe you should try one of those mouse cozy's. Those are so cute! And they keep your mouse nice a toasty.

No, I meant drivers for the mouse.
Do you have any other usb devices

Only my ADSL modem.
But it has only started happening recently, like 2 days ago.

Tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it?
what make and model, a new driver might help
Try swapping the adsl modem to the other usb port, and the mouse where the adsl modem is.

BTW, your 'mouse' is called a TRACKBALL. Alot of people say its better for playing games because it isn't limited to the size of the mousepad.
What software or hardware have you installed or taken out in the last two days?

No newly installed progs
I have tried swapping them over, no luck.
It's a microsoft intellimouse i think...Still doing it, maybe i will buy new mouse and see if thats the prob.

Have you deleted any programs over the last two days?
Also, check your Device Manager. I don't know where this is because I don't use Win2k. However in Win98SE you get it by right clicking My Computer and selecting Properties.
See if there are any checkmarks to any of your devices, expecially your mouse.
...ALSO, GET YOURSELF SOME ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE NOW!!!
THAT COULD BE YOUR PROBLEM RIGHT THERE!!!!!

Hello - First post!
First off I'm pretty certain he means an optical mouse rather than a trackball.
Also I had this problem with my comp was overheating. My comp would lock up for a few seconds and then unlock itself making it seem if only the mouse had froze.
I already know he has had problem with proc fan not working correctly.

The post above says its your processor fan. What is your current cpu temp right now? If its overheating this could easily be your problem.
If not, are you getting strange error messages? If so what are they?
You could always try changing the mouse pointer. This may
help you.
Try running scandisk, also system file checker. These again, are Win98 programs. I don't know if Win2k has equivalents.
Disable power management in the bios but keep it enabled in the OS.
Finally, was the proper setting for this device (whatever it was..usb, optical, trackball) enabled in the bios when you connected the mouse?
Good Luck,

Hello Anewbe4u - and welcome to the forums... yes you have a very good point there. Coincidence is a strange thing, the number of times I have been called for one thing to find another piece of hardware decided to die at the same time is too many.
Orangeman, I am not sure why you think houllier* has 2k... this is posted in the 95/98 forum and he hasn't mentioned any other os.
houllier* - A couple more things to think about. I have an optical mouse that does NOT like certain patterned surfaces, I can drive it crazy putting it on a plastic covered map of the world!
The other, is that you have a new mouse with new drivers... it's possible it is making calls on the video drivers that the video drivers cannot handle... What video card do you have and when was the last time you updated the drivers?

Hi

How do i find out the temp?
Try running scandisk,
Ye, i plan on doing that, what programs do i need to disable in the background for it to work? I remember i had to disable a few last time otherwise it wouldn't work.
Finally, was the proper setting for this device (whatever it was..usb, optical, trackball) enabled in the bios when you connected the mouse?
No idea, i just plugged it in and it worked, as i say, i have had it for about 4 months and has worked fine upto now.
The other, is that you have a new mouse with new drivers
It isn't new, it has only started happening recently, and while i do have a prob with the fan so it could be overheating, it has been like that since i got the mouse and has only recently started happening, so it could well be something else too.
Thanks again!

- I could be either in the BIOS under System Settings. Press F8 when you restart and see if you find an area for system settings. Other than that your motherboard should have come with a disk that has a temperture utility.

- You disable background programs by pressing CNTL, AlT, Del once and together, and viewing the list of programs that come up. Highlight the program and the click 'end task' at the bottom. Do this to each program in line except Internet Explorer. This will eliminate background programs.
-The other way is to go to STart>Run and type in MSCONFIG. then uncheck everything except Win.ini and System.ini.

Hi
I ran scandisc, but no luck
My proccessor is a Pentium 3, not sure of motherboard, it al came pre built, didn't get much info, and this was like 3 years ago.
Can't seem to find the temp either, tried pressing F8...Any other way?
Can't even play UT now :[
Thanks

Okay,
Start>Run> type MSCONFIG. Then replace the checkmarks you took off in the last step. This should restore your previous functions. Under 'selective startup' you should have everything checked.
I'm sorry I was not able to help you with your mouse problem. Perhaps someone else can help.

never load mouse software, use WINDOWS defalts, If they do not work, throw or sell mouse. I have not seen any mouse software that will enhance any system. Don't believe me, try both........

WAKE UP! Did you not notice when you plugged that mouse in and booted that it workt???? Then you loaded drivers that came with it and now you have these probles. Go to control panel, look for mouse drivers, remove, restart, check it out.

ram is pretty cheap right now,128 or 256 might be worth adding,to see if that cures it.
you are on that border line with only 128.

128mb for 98 is plenty. I think that the drivers he loaded need to be removed.

well like I said,I was speaking from personal experience with that same problem with 98 with 128 of ram as a matter of fact.
and I have to disagree, with the software and games of today,128 is not enough for ANY OS,IMHO.

Hmmm, this sounds very familar... I had a Microsoft Intillimouse Explorer (one of the original ones) and after much use, it started freezing for no apparent reason. After much testing and messing around I found that the mouse had developed some sort of loose connection in the mouse cord near where it went into the mouse. If I wigged and moved the cord around I could cause it to freeze, or sometimes restore itself after it had frozen. Try doing that and see if it seems to be the source of the problem.

Ive just been through a batch of faulty optical mice under the brand of "keymouse". Went crazy trying to fix a similar problem to this one on the first machine it came up on, using all the lines of enquiry mentioned. The mouse had been fine for the first month or so, so I assumed it was a puter issue.
But then I got a few more calls about the same thing, all with keymouses on. Buttons would work on some, but no cursor action, or mouse would just freeze for no reason.
Faulty mouse - that was the only answer. Put on Samsung optical mouse - problem solved.

Another mouse is a good idea, that should tell you right away whether it's a driver problem, temperature problem or whatever....
If your pc is a typical unbranded custom build, you should be able to get into the bios by pressing the Delete key during bootup. Once you're in you should be able to find your current CPU and motherboard temps.
