Is ICS possible on WinXP with an Ethernet Hub?!

Hi.

I have a cable connection and want my two WinXP Pro computers to share it. Each computer has an ethernet card and I also have an 8-port ethernet hub which has an Uplink port.

I was wondering if it's possible to enable the two computers to share the same Internet connection without the need of a router or any other extra adapters.

I would really appreciate any help I could get on this.

Yes, ICS will fill the bill. Run the wizard, it should do the trick.

I'm a little confused. what configuration are you shooting for here?

do you want to hook the modem up to the uplink port of the hub and share that way? I don't think that is possible unless you're hub/switch is also a router.

I'm not sure if ICS works with USB modems or not, but to get the config to work over ethernet, you'd need another network card. one NIC would hook to the modem and one NIC to the rest of the network. ICS would act as a "soft router" of sorts and help machines on your network get out onto the internet.

Thanks for replying guys. Well, here's my configuration:

1. The cable modem which can be connected either by USB or by ethernet.

2. Two WinXP machines, each with its NIC.

3. The ethernet hub which has an uplink port.

Here's what I thought of doing but I haven't tried it yet. Don't know if it'll work.

What if I was to connect the cable modem by USB to the first computer, then run a cable from that computer's NIC to the hub (not sure if it should go to the uplink port or not) and set that computer as a host.

Then just run another cable into the hub from the second computer and set that as the client computer.

What do you think? Would that work? Could someone please help me figure out if I should connect anything into the uplink port or not?

give it a shot. I don't know if ICS works with USB modems or not, but what can it hurt to try.

another cheap and non intrusive (don't have to crack the case) solution would be to pick up a under $20 USB to network adapter. hook the cable modem up to that. I know that would work with ICS without a hitch.

Hook the modem up via usb and then share the connection. then configure the second computer and you should be in business. Good luck.

i connected my DSL modem to the uplink port on my hub. connected both PCs and my xbox to my hub. used windows ICS on my main XP machine and everthing works just fine.

my ISP uses PPPoE if that makes a difference.

i just wanted to let everyone know that it works this way also
