To remove all infected files, I have downloaded (free trial period of`15 days) Norton AntiVirus 2003. Great application. It removed almost all viruses, but one: Backdoor.Netdevil. It is hiden in a shellapi.exe file and caused the Windows Socket error I mentioned before. What can I do to repair the file? (repair, quarantine and deletion didn't work). I don't have the original Windows 98 Plus cd-rom any more (probably lost after the move). Please help.

The Shellapi.exe IS the virus, it's not a Windows system file at all. If Norton doesn't get rid of it, try this: open the registry editor and navigate to HKEY_LocalMachine/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Currentversion/Run, delete any references to shellapi.exe
Once you have done that, close the registry editor and shut down windows. Boot to a command prompt at start up by pressing F8 as the computer is booting. Delete the shellapi.exe file from the DOS prompt. Reboot and the virus -should- be gone.
