newbie trying to setup but cant

hello all i am trying to hook up a router for my cable modem so my dad and i can both surf the net at same time but this isnt working. I followed Linksys directions but i still cant get it to work. This is what i have done.
1)Cable from Modem to WAN in Router (e cable)
2)cable from my compter to router 4 (i use USB)
3)cable from dad computer to rounter 3 (e cable)

all lights come on but it wont work. I tried settign up router by used default set by typing http://192.168.1.1 in IE and setting up but the default password should be "admin" and no login name but its not working. Thanks in advance.

Actually, most routers require that you use admin as the username with no password.

try running a network cable (cat5) from the router to the NIC in your computer instead of the usb cable

i tried that also . I used network cable to hook up modem to rounter -- router to my computer - cable to dads pc. no luck

Make sure you have tcp/ip protocol installed in both computers (network properties). What OS are we talking about here?

XP and tcp/ip are both installed

If you are getting a log-on screen from IE at the router address, the cable from you to the router is working. I suggest that both machines use the same type of hookup. Cat 5 is best. Make sure your caps lock is off (admin must be lower case) Linksys does use admin as password with no user name. You might go to a command prompt and type ipconfig /all and see if the router provided you with a TCP/IP address and what it is. Try the same with the other machine to check connectivity for it. Does your ISP use an auto configuration? If it does, you should be up and running. You might check your TCPIP properties on the one unit that was connected to the Internet at one time to check your settings. If your using static addressing, you need to configure your router to match and set your computers to auto config. Best of luck.....

backing up a step, have you run the "setup a network" wizard in my network places yet?If all lights are on and the machines look like they see each other you should be all set. did ipconfig/all tell you anything?

im sorry . but i did get it to work . I dont know what i did but i just unplugged everything and started over. I went in baby steps and its working now ! Now all i have to do is run one more cable for my PS2 and im ready to kick some SOCOM @$$ ! Thanks guys

Amazing how many times cold rebooting of cable modems and routers solves problems;)
