Hello guys,

I'm a newbie with linux, how do I go about turning my 486 desktop into a Hardware Firewall using red hat/mandrake/suse distro?

AMD 486 DX4100, 32MB RAM, 1.2GB bigfoot, 3com 905b LAN card or IntelPRO100+ lan card, KM-S4-1 motherboard, serial mouse, old plug keyboard, adi 14" monitor.

I also have a Winxp pro connected to DSL also with 2 NICS, and a Sony VAIO PCG650 winxp pro with Linksys USB LAN 100TX.

2 computers + 1 486 FIREWAll (can I also use 486 FW as mail/web server)?

Thanks in advance, you guys are the best :)

You wont learn much about linux with this method but you could use smoothwall : http://www.smoothwall.org/.
Download the image and burn it to CD it has a fairly simple interface once installed.

I have seen a linux distro firewall runnable from a boot disk here: http://www.zelow.no/floppyfw/

You can set it up as a file/web/domain controler/mail/firewall/router/a bunch of other stuff by installing [url=http://www.e-smith.org/downloads/]SME Server[url] Works great and is simple to install and maintain. It is based off of RedHat so it does have muscle behind it (for when you get more advanced and want to do more things). Changing over to full blown redhat wont be such a shock. Great little os for a noob.
