Machines can't see each other?

Have 2 machines, both using Windows 2000. Machines are both hooked up to a linksys router. Router is set to DHCP for the cable modem and the machines themselves. Both machines are set to DHCP. The machines can access the router and the internet fine, but they cannot access each other. Any ideas?

can you ping each other...

try this: go into the command prompt (start->run->cmd) and use the ping command

Step1:

machine1: ping machine2 (if it doesnt see machine2 then goto step2)

Step2:

Machine2: Ping Machine1 (if it doesnt see machine1 then goto step3)

Step3:

Are both machines on the same Workgroup?

Try going into the command prompt (start->run->cmd)

type ipconfig /all

post what you see (select all content right click the top menu bar of the dos prmpt and click edit then copy, then past it as your post )

are the submasks the same? are the ips in the same range?

example: 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2
Submask: 255.255.255.0

what type of linksys router?

Have you got any firewall software installed? I have often had this problem with firewall software. You need to configure the firewall to allow access from the other IP address.

So you go into My Networks Places -> Computers Near Me or Entire Network and you can't see both machines? Or is it that they can't access each other's shares. You say in the subject they can't see each other but in your writeup you say they can't access each other which can be two things. It could just be that you are getting an accessed denied since the accounts aren't setup on both machines for them to access each other. Or you could just turn the guest account on.

I was just going to mention that. Also make sure that both computers are in the same workgroup (not really neccesary but it makes like easier). Also check to see if "Use Netbios over tcp/ip" is selected in the tcp/ip settings.

And make sure File and Print sharing is installed if you wish to share files.
