Is it because of IE6?

Customer brought in following system:
Pentium 166 MMX
128MB
8 GB HDD
It was recently upgraded to IE6 and since then it takes forever to print anything--sits there, and sits there and finally it prints. It also seems to have a slight hesitation everytime that you click on something and the mouse seems a bit erratic. Could it have anything to do with the IE6 upgrade?
Have run WinDoctor and hardware checks--everything seems to check out OK.
Any ideas??:confused:

I doubt it - may have been coincidental.

Have you tried to modify the printing config (RAW-EMF)?

I have a friend who has a P133 with 64mb of RAM. It has IE 5.5. He says it takes about 20 minutes to turn a page on the web.

I don't think 133's or 166's were made for IE 6.0. At most I would use IE 4.0, 3.2 if you could get away with it. Here is a page for it.

The IE 3.2 is at the BOTTOM of the page.

You will need to uninstall IE 6.0. You do it by uninstalling IE 6.0 plus Internet Tools in ADD/REMOVE Programs of Control Panel.

Try another browser such as Opera (http://www.opera.com/download/) and you can check the printing problem by eradicating IE (http://www.litepc.com/ier_lic.html) and you may even want to look at 98 Lite (http://www.litepc.com/download.html)

Sometimes the printer software just needs removing and reloading.

So sorry for the double post--was not sure where this should go! (Consider my hand slapped)
The reason that the system was upgraded to IE 6.0 was that he had a virus problem and purchased McAffee--it required that the system be running IE 6.0.
I have tried uninstalling the printer and reinstalling--have not yet had a chance to test it because he has not brought the printer in yet.
Will let you know if it does any good.

Unless there's a specific reason for using McAfee (I use it because it has a PalmOS AV also), he should check out www.grisoft.com for AVG.

It's free, it's good, and a lot of the techs here highly recommend it. It's even compatible with DOS, so your client should be safe with Win9x and IE4 or 5.x.

I think it may even be Noonoo endorsed. :D

Well, it is free, but I am concerned that it doesn't update that often... some weeks pc cillin will update everyday depending on the viruses running round, but AVG only updates every two weeks.

Having said that, AVG is running on hubby's computer (high risk for all kinds of stuff :rolleyes: ) and after having immunized him using Spybot the computer has not yet caught anything nasty... however, it is a pc chips motherboard, perhaps even viruses have their standards :eek2: :D :D

I have AVG running on a clients pc and it seems to update on average at least once per week.

For example I checked on Tuesday and the update was 25/03, ran a manual update and it went to 01/04.

Virus problem, that could be the reason, Damaged system files, that would slow a printer down
I do not like Mcaffee just for that reason, Poorly written software, I have had nothing but bad experiences with their older stuff, You think they would have learned
And upgrading the browser with a Virus is a no go to me, get rid of the virus first

.....Just my two cents. I had McAfee for over a year. Never did figure out how to use all of it. Its simply too complicated because it has too many bells and whistles. Also, it was always interfering with my screensaver or some other program and causing 'invalid page fault' errors.

Another reason I got rid of it was because at the time I had a P233 and its constant scanning of files each and every time I tried to open one was damned inconvenient! It slowed down my computer down by at least 50%. Trying to figure out how big my HD was, was impossible because it took amost 10 minutes to count all the folders!

If you MUST use Mcafee, and that's a big IF, I would reconfigure it to turn off active virus scan every time you open a file.

I don't remember how to do it but I'm sure you can find it in the help file somewhere.
