can't install w98

I was asked to install w98 on a laptop with w95, because my friend had lost her 95 disks. She had a new w98 disk. I couldn't install because she should have got an upgrade but she got a standalone. Nothing was on the laptop but Windows so, to hurry things, I reformatted the hard drive (BIG mistake) and installed 98. Now, I can only get 2 colors or 16 colors. I can't get on-line because the servers all need at least 256 colors. From a verybasic diagnosis disk, it looks like there is a NeoMagic monitor but in her docs, there is nothing listed. I'm desperate for help.

We need the make and model of the laptop to help you. There is nothing seriously wrong, you just lack the correct drivers.

Its a Compaq, Model 1220, and I think the monitor isNeoMagic. I can't get online because the server I have requires 256 colors.

Compaq drivers at hp (http://www29.compaq.com/falco/sp_result.asp?Model=1967&Os=8) Compaq are famous for not putting a full driver set on their website for a particular model, so you have to go hunting. Windows 95 driver for your neo magic video (http://www29.compaq.com/falco/sp_detail.asp?Model=0&Family=7&SwCategory=2&Div=4&Os=3&SoftwareVer=12674) The windows 95 driver should work just as well in windows 98.

We can't find my friend's Windows95 disk. This was what started the whole problem. And there doesn't seem to be a driver for NeoMagic in 98. Would I find it if it was there by clicking on Add new hardware? I'm sure I did this . If I can't get online with the laptop in question, have you any suggestions? I have a Zip Drive. I'll try to install that on the problem computer to see if I can transfer the driver that way. Or maybe it will fit on a disk. If and when, do I put it in the windows main program or system or where? A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I'll not offer to help again.
