Hello everyone at windrivers.com! This is my first visit here after doing something on my PC that I shouldnt have and now while panicking, jumped on my partners computer to find a Forum just like this! Excellent Stuff, be adding this to the favourites now I think :-)

Any way, I just installed a new CD Writer finaly and was rushing through the driver update thing that 98 does automaticaly and I think I have installed a couple of Drivers where they arent supposed to be and my computer now only shows 640x480, wont open certain things and still says I need to install DirectX 5 or higher afetr I have re-installed DirectX 8.1?

I cant seem to figure out how to get the right drivers back in the right place? Any clues and does this even make sence? I hope so, any Questions you have post a message and I'll get back to ya ASAP!

Here are the drivers in the system config with the little yellow arrow beside them:

- Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) BIOS

- Dial Up Adapter

Thanks everyone in advance that replies :D :D :D

PS, The CD Writer Works Just lovely. its always seems that when I get something new I muck something up! Ah-Well, thanks again!

My best advice is to reboot into safe mode and go into device manager, more than likely you have several multiple drivers killing that 98 box. Whack everything out of device manager, 1 by 1, and after reboot and let them all redect. Do not reboot if it asks you just let it keep installing everything. After it is all done you should have like 3 splatted drivers: video, keyboard, and direct memory access controller. Remove all instances of those list (splatted/not splatted) reboot and let it finish for the last time....if it still doesnt work you can try to scanreg /restore from dos but i would check out safe mode first for those duplicate drivers....let me know if you are still having problems

If kineda's suggestion doesn't work, get your 98 cd out, boot from it (or bootdiskette) run setup again and install into the SAME directory (it should default to c:\windows.000 - don't let it, change it to c:\windows)

That should sort out the controller issues, then you will need to reload your video and possibly sound and modem drivers.

Good point NooNoo, but unless you want to reinstall all of your software again make sure to pick save system configuration ;)

Do you have any idea which drivers, or what type of drivers are the bad ones?

What kind of checkmarks are in your Device Manager if any?

PS> If those solutions don't work, You might also try Start>Find>Files & Folders>Date>Find all file s(installed in the previous (number of days) (day)

....and then just remove the files.
