Hello all!,

NEC 6FGP
NEC XP21

At the risk of being a little rude ;) (Can't you do your own googling?) you can find reviews for all these on the net.....

Finding something that compares just this selection is a different matter - and then on what criteria .....?

So before folk start popping up with their views perhaps a little indication of whats really important to you .... price perhaps? Warranty service ? Picture clarity ? Colour depth/trueness/sharpness ? Refresh rates ? Is 'footprint' important? Power saving features? blah blah blah..... and with what are we supplying the signal to it? Some monitors are gorgeous with certain video adapters yet dire with others .... you get the drift ! ;) :D

I appreciate a 21" monitor is probably a 'significant' investment so we want a good deal for you don't we :)

ouch!

all I wanted was to read some comments from you expert guys or something like "hey don't buy that model, I used to have one, but then one day it exploded in front of my face, and now I'm half blind, for life!"

thanks anyway :o

Most of us "experts" can't afford that kind of monitor :D

All the models you have quoted are good brands. What you need to do is go to a place with your favourite game/software package and getting the monitor demonstrated showing you what is important to you.

Pricing is not a concern since all the monitors are old models and are either refurbished/second hand. and I can't find decent reviews on these

thanks Noonoo and Confused :)

I wasn't having a go .... that's just my weird or should that be wired(?) sense of humour can be a bit mystifying from time to time so I'm told.....

Ha so second hand ! You see the more you give the more you receive ! Sooooo in that case not the nec models ..... They use 'unusual' bits .... or so I'm told .... any I've ever had to get repaired seemed to involve expensive bits ! And the only other thankfully positive thing I can say is I've never had either an hitatchi or Canon monitor needing to be fix-ed ! :D ...

As Noo says all these are 'good' brands, we used to have a monitor techie who lived here, but he's vanished into cyber space so no one who really specialises, so you'll have to put up with mine & Noo's views .... unless we have more takers ....

I would say be careful on price, unless these are all under 2 years or so I'd want them very cheap indeed ... remember if the tube goes that's all your money & like I said getting old/non-standard bits can end up racking up more than you paid.....hopefully that's abit better .... but the more precise you make the question the easier it is to answer...

;) :)

Mmmm is that cheap enough ? .... I'm in the uk (!) .... I can buy a cheapie 19" monitor for nearly that complete with a three year 'exchange' warranty... (£99-mind I get a big fat dealer discount, but these retail at £113, I dunno what the exchange rate is I usually say add a 1/3rd to get to dollars...), mind these are cheap & cheerful....

Prices have tumbled with monitors especially the bigger sizes, I'd still want some kind of warranty with them at least 6 months.

The other thing to remember is that the quality has gone up while the prices have gone down, todays 'cheapies' are better than mid-range stuff from 2 years ago, and seem to last pretty good too, footprint comes to play as well :D, I have an Iiyama 21" from 3 years ago which needs its own desk its soooo big, the newest model has almost a foot less depth !!!

I think the price is probably good for you and any customer who appreciates they are 're-cons' ... but if you want to pair them with new systems you might need a re-think?

brand new 19" here costs around US$162.87(GBP103.75)-172.45 (GBP109.85) and 21" US$622.5(GBP396.52) for Viewsonic G810 - US$1,013.37(GBP645.5) for Sony CPD-G520 with 1 year warranty at most.

that's why I was thinking about the surplus ones, but your probably right, maybe wait for them 21"s to drop prices :)

The 19" monitor I was refering to was a "proview" - these are considered a budget brand ... but I'm 'jiggered' if I can see a difference, between these and so called quality brands! As far as I know these come with a 3 year 'swap' warranty worldwide ... I'd say a years warranty on a monitor is pants !

Try here (http://www.proview.net/product/index.htm) for availability in the US for proview ... for the money I like these very much ... no kudos, but no price-hike either !;)

& edit

Oh hang on a mo you are in 'asia' ;) .... well that narrows it down a lot ! But I'm sure you can find someone close who sells these....

Another thing for you to consider.......

Due to their expense (new), 21" & larger monitors tend to be used mostly in the graphics / animation / 3D rendering types of industry so will have had a very hard life by the time they get into the "2nd user" market.

We've worked in these industries (& still occasionally do) and I can assure you that the equipment is generally abused, never being switched off & really worked hard.

A local astrologer needs a 21" to do her star charts & things on. She went through 3 "factory refurb" units, (2 x Intergraph(re-badged Panasonic) & 1 x Compaq) all purchased from a reputable (?) reseller with 3 month warranties. The best only lasted 10 months before failing!

Luckily we were able to purchase a surplus, sealed & boxed, brand new Dell Trinitron (from a TV animation company direct) at a very reasonable £125 so she is now very happy!

:D :D

When it comes to second hand, try before you buy.

I'd avoid NEC's. Mitsubishi Diamondtron's are the best CRT's on the planet.
