Hello :) ...i am using a compaq presario 100c with compaq presario v410 monitor...i recently had to format c drive...installed ME at the same time...problem is that i can only get 16 colours now as pc reverts to standard vga graphics adapter, even after going into safe mode and selecting 256 colours. Compaq advises me that i need to install SiS6326 graphics adapter driver which i have downloaded from www.sis.com, but pc tells me this is incompatible and freezes whenever i restart after installing it...and still won't give me 256 colours. I am a novice and any help would be appreciated please...i'm getting withdrawal symptoms cos i can't play pool anymore :( ...thanks :)

If you are trying to fix a compaq you should go to compaqs website and download all of the drivers but everything should be ready to go with your quick restore cd....

Take a look at the back of your computer..does the monitor attach close to the connections for the keyboard and mouse? If so, you have a different onboard graphics card. Your monitor should connect lower down where there are some silver slots. (if you have a tower and not a desktop type of case)If you downoloaded one of the drivers from sis, you might have noticed that they have two for that graphics card..
go here (http://download.sis.com/sisdlc/driver_list.jsp) and try the other one.

Thanks for the replies...quick restore cd was my first choice, but since installing ME this no longer works...i have also been to compaq website...even had a "live chat" with a support person there, but i have just received an e-mail from them this morning stating "We would be glad to help you but unfortunately the drivers are not available. The presario 100C is tested and designed to work with only windows 98 and the drivers are available for windows 98 only. The display chip in your system is sis6326. Download the drivers from any thirdparty website and install it"...i have tried this several times, and each time pc tells me sis6326 is not compatible...i guess i could uninstall ME and go back to windows 98 but since formatting C drive, pc does not recognise my supra express 56i pro modem unless i'm using ME...i am now totally  as to what i should try next...

Did you try Geocomps link?

LyndaJane
April 16th, 2003, 12:31 PM
Yes i did...whichever download i use it has the same effect...once sis6326 is installed, pc freezes on restart...goes into safe mode, and when restarted again, i get an error message that the display file is not working properly and i may have to install a different adapter...the only one that pc says is compatible is standard vga which of course will not give me more than 16 colours...:(

OK, having looked for the compaq version of the 98 driver I wonder...

Would you please go to www.belarc.com download the free personal audit and post what it says under "Controllers" and "Main Circuit Board"

I have a feeling that they omitted to tell you about your chipset drivers first...

It looks like the chipset driver is included in win ME..I wonder if this will help..go to the link I posted earlier..agree to the blurb..and on the driver download page is a utility towards the bottom that will scan your machine and tell you what chipset and graphics chip is installed..try running that

I think this may be it (http://www29.compaq.com/falco/sp_detail.asp?Model=0&Family=1&SwCategory=2&Div=4&Os=8&SoftwareVer=12070) - the 530, not 6326...

Thank you...i have installed the 530 and it works a treat :)...i'm very impressed...thank you also for the friendly and courteous manner in which you helped me...i recently spent some time at another forum on a different site and was made to feel dense :( ...talking to the people here has been a very pleasant experience...thanks again :thumbs2:

Pleasure... you might want to call compaq and ask them why they told you to get a sis 6326 driver for a 530 chipset.... ;)

Hi folks!

I was wondering if anyone out there might be able to help me as i am having this problem with my colours and resolution (ie only 16 colors and it crashes when i try to restart it)on my Compaq 100c with ME. I have an MV720 monitor though.
I did a system check on Belarc and all my specs were the same as LyndaJane's. I tried downloading the sis530 chipset driver but that didn't help.

Any suggestions would greatly appreciated as i am tearing my hair out with this!

thanks hudson,

I downloaded from the sis site like you gave but it was the same version that i already downloaded. It just doesn't seem to work.
I did a check on the online hardware audit on the sis website and it said i have a 620 ide controller. I downloaded the 620 driver and its just the same as the 530. Is there something that i'm doing wrong with the insatllation of the driver??? Driving me nuts!!
As i said, my system specs are exactly the same as lornajaynes above but the 530 driver just doesn't work!

Any other assistance would be great or advise on what i'm doing wrong!!

Thanks again!

The ide controller is for your hard drive. You need the agp controller and video adapter. Download everest http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=3 Got to Motherboard\Chipset, right click on that and select quick report (plain text), and post the report here.

Have you tried this one: http://download.sis.com/download_step1.php?act=Search&mode=2&category=14&subcategory=205&os=8353&x=22&y=11 ?
Also, check your bios settings. Your AGP is reporting as disabled.

yeah i've already tried that one, had the same problem.

How do i check my bios settings? sorry, don't mean to sound dumb, some of this stuff is new to me!

When you turn on your computer, there should be a message something like "press F10 to enter setup". If F10 doesn't work, other typical keys are F1, F2, DEL. Look for a setting regarding onboard video.

hi again hudson,

I tried this and couldn't find anything concerning display adapter other than changing between pci and Agp. Nothing saying that any display options were disabled.

Would you say that i am downloading the correct adapter driver? I am running with the 530 at the moment and can only get 16 colours.

Thanks for your continuing help.

Joel

Hi hudson,

Please scarp that last post. I tried taking off the 530 adapter and letting windows identify it at startup (for the 400 time!!!!) and its worked!!!!!!! Don't know why but its great. Full 16 bit colour!!!

You've been a big help and i'll definitely recommend this forum and use it myself when the need arises.

Cheers

Joel
