Folder Sharing

I need to know how to share a folder in Windows XP, when it's already marked private. No matter what i do, I can't make this folder available for sharing. The space for the "make folder private" is checked and greyed out.

Any ideas how to unlock this folder?

Turn off simple file sharing in my computer, tools, options.

I'll have to give that a go when I get home. Unfortunately, I'm shackled to my workstation, and I can't break free.

Also, when you select My Network Places, all the folders aren't shown like they used to be. Why does that happen?

Is it me, or does it seem that XP took away the simplicity of networking and replaced it with GUI'ness for the morons.

Under My Computer, there are 2 folders at the top of the screen: Shared Documents & Jim's Documents(this is the problematic one). If I right click on Jim's Documents, left click onto Properties, select the Sharing tab, and all three spots are checked. All I want to do is uncheck the Make This Folder Private option. No matter what I do, I can't access this folder from another pc on my network. Is there some way I could make all the folders available for all, and not have them marked as private?

are you logged in as Jim? may be a shot in the dark . . . . but perhaps you have to be logged on as the owner of the folder to reassign permissions.

To change the user setting in XP you must be logged on as that user!

This might have to do with being a restricted user if the account 'Jim' doesn't have administrator rights.

Because Jim's Doc's are under a share that allows rights to be inherited....

I remember reading that if the XP system wasn't attached to a Domain, what it creates is a systemwide "shared" folder that you can drop files into to be accessed by all users. The individuals users folders are then only accesable by that logged in user. In your case I assume you have admin rights to be able to view another users "non-shared" folder.

In xp it's really hard to share folders in the document settings folder. It is impossible to share any folder in the program files folder. Anyways the way I have gotten around this is to do one of two things: one copy the my documents folder from the users folder to the c: drive or create a folder (any folder it doesn't matter) and then right clik on the my documents folder and then selecet move, browse to the newly created folder and then select ok. It "should" move all files and folders to the new directory. Then you can share the folder like any other. Cheers.
