I personally like to keep my PC up to date with all the latest patches and fixes, especially for XP. there was one XP patch that was talked about on here that many people had problems when installing it. It slowed down system performance.
heres a link to it

but as I mentioned many people DID have problems when they installed it. Thats just FYI.

Often it is a good move to wait a couple of weeks before applying new patches.
By then Microsoft have ironed out any problems.

Unless you like beta testing!

If you are online alot then security patches are a must. SP1 also provided native support for things like USB2 and sorted out a fair few other niggles.

I usually get them all for my main/gaming/web PC.

For clients, I would tend to download only the crucial ones they need.

About 90% of the time, updates have caused me no troubles. The other 10% make me wish at times why I bothered ever going to work that day.. :flame:

My philosopy thouards XP updates is the same as every ms os: i just install the one i know i need. The others can wait until i get to that conclusion.
The Microsoft itself advice future system engineers to bee very carefull on this, and to use only when its known that it will indeed solve a problem.
