sound not working in windows xp

Hi. I get a message that reads: Cannot Install this Hardware. There was a problem installing this hardware. Microsoft Kernel Wave Audio Mixer. An error occurred during the installation of the device. The data is invalid.
I just upgraded to windows xp from windows 2000. The install went good with no errors except for the one listed.

This is a common error and it is fixed by editing the registry

This error appears to be due to a protection problem in the Windows registry and can occur with a variety of drivers (sound cards and SCSI drivers have been reported). To fix this problem, go to Start, Run... and type "regedit" without the quotes to run the Registry Editor. Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\P CI

and you will see a number of keys of the form "VEN_xxxx", where xxxx are strings like "1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_00011103&REV_04". Under each of these folders will be another folder with a long numerical name. Open each folder and look for the "DeviceDesc" which matches the hardware you are trying to install. Right Click on the "VEN_xxxx" for that device and select 'Permissions' and then tick "Allow" for "Full Control". Close Regedit and then continue with the installation of your device.

I tried to edit the registry and no luck. I could not find the string with "Microsoft Kernel Audio Mixer" I have tried to get the newest patches for eveything but that is the only one that gives me a problem

So what sound card do you have? Or is it onboard sound? In which case, what motherboard do you have?

I have an ECS mother board with onboard sound. The CD that came with the board has drivers for Via technologies. I have tried to uninstall and then reinstall the drivers. I still get the microsoft kernel audio mixer error.

This particular 'integrated' sound chip is famed for its non-integration ... :D

Can you post the exact motherboard model, please ... there's 'varieties' of this chip ... it mightn't even be correctly identified by windows.....

I appreciate you already have drivers, but perhaps for the wrong 'variety', manufacturers often get confus-ed themselves :D

i have the same problem, but im not sure of teh specs of my motherboard - i think it is Mercury SIS746 AMD 8xAGP - because on the invoice for the computer it has (m/b) next to this, but if theres a surefire way for me to find out the specs please could sum1 tell me how to do it, thanks..i was using c-media ac97 on win98, but since upgradin to xp non of the xp drivers for this seem to work. and theres the microsoft kernel errors

each time i try to use regedit it vanishes after a few seconds of browsing.. any ideas why it does this?

i must be the dumbest, or the smartest person in the world. i fixed my sound problem by just erasin all those (!) drivers, and letting them reinstall themselves. i hear music. heh. thank u everyone for ur help.
