Having problems fdisking WD Caviar 23200, 3.2 gig HDD, fdisk info shows 2 partitions,

C: 1 A PRI DOS 2004 FAT 16 65%
2 EXT DOS 1091 35%

It then says EXT DOS partition contains logical dos drives, if I say yes to information it says "no logical dos drives defined,

The problem I have is I can't delete anything, it wont let me delete PRI DOS when EXT DOS partition exists,
I can't delete EXT partition while LOGICAL drive exists, if I try and delete LOGICAL PARTITION in the EXT DOS drive, it says NO LOGICAL DOS DRIVES DEFINED,

Connected it to my system, Partition Magic 8 says : Disc (3098mb 395c 255h 63s) appears to have partitions created using a different drivegeometry (128h 63s) this serious problem can lead to daa loss,
it then goes on to say it can't do anything using PM 8, and then says I sould delete all partitions andcreate new ones under the new drive geometry, bet can't seem to get any joy with FDISK, any ideas?

If the data is backed up - well even if it isn't you can use the zero fill (sometimes called low level format) www.maxtor.com has one in the powermax utils. WD should have one too.

The zero fill will overwrite everything, partitions included.

All I got from WD utils was an error code, but the maxtor zero fill done the trick, many thanks Noo Noo, exellent tech support,
"AS ALWAYS", many thanks...:)

if the wd utils gave an error number, it means your disk is possibly going bad. you may not want to use that hardisk if you need reliability

check the error code here.

Not to say it isn't indicative of a failing drive .... but these utils can get confus-ed by 'bad' disc geometry too ....;)

Formating under fat 16, doesn't 'align' partition boundaries with cyclinder boundaries ..... when fat 16 was invented there wasn't a need .... as such drives that have fat 16 partitions defined within them can often 'go screwey' when other file systems are used on its other partitions.....

So now you've zero filled , run the diags again .... if you still get errors then listen to Matridom ! ;) :D , but you might find its just a matter of file system confus-ed-ness :D

RE RUN Western Digital Diagnostics, got error code 132, system command error which told me to use an older version of DLGDIAG, which I did.

Run extended test, and drive tested perfect, on errors,

Thanks for all the input though everybody.
