Hi All,
Here's something that we discovered this week, may help someone to NOT look stupid :) May not!
One of our customers had 100 Dell's arrive last week. Our techies went along and installed our printer software on 10 of them no probs at all.
This week another 100 turned up, techies went to install the same stuff again on 10 of the newer ones and it was blocked by XP. The software does not have Microsoft digital signatures, and these newer 100 Dells by default had automatic blocking enabled for drivers without digital signatures. The ones delivered last week did not have it blocked, they just had it set to warn only. Well I had phone calls asking how to set this to warn only, and found it fairly quickly, (it's amazing how hard it can be to find something in a panic)!!!!!
This got us wondering why XP was suddenly set to block unsigned drivers by default, wheras last week it was set to warn, and there are 2 explanations....
1. Dell has set all new systems to block unsigned drivers, (do they need more calls to their help center?)
2. Microsoft has set this in XP as a default setting, (will it sell more microsoft products?)
Why did I post this in Tech Tips? Because you may find you get a call to change this setting in the very near future, find out where it is now and you'll look damn good when asked :D
