USB & Unsupported Device

Hello, I have a problem with a strange XP behavior : I own a Digicom ADSL Modem (Alcatel Dynamite Chipset). Since saturday, it worked fine, no problems at all. Sunday morning, at startup, XP found an Unsupported Device and my modem disappeared. I've tried to remove and reinstall drivers, but nothing changed. I was thinking it was broken, but, booting in Win 2k (same PC, of course), the modem worked fine, therefore I've decided to format th XP partition and re-install XP, Service Pack and all drivers needed. Finally, I've re-plugged my modem: unsupported device.

My sistem is a XP Home SP1, MB Asus P4PE, USB 2.0, Celeron 2Ghz, 512 DDR/333, only Ahead Nero installed.
Do someone knows about XP/USB problems like this?

Hi,
This is a long shot, since you have formatted and installed the OS from Scratch. you have eliminated the possibility of corrupted OS.
Therefore IMHO the problem is on the hardware side.
Try the following:
connect the modem into another compurer (if iit does the same the problem is obviously with the modem)
connect other USB device to the same USB port on the computer (if it is not working than the problem is with the port).
connect the modem to another port in the same computer.

this will help you get te sittuation under control - at least U will have better understanding of what is wrong.

What drivers are you using for XP?

How did you install the drivers? Drivers first, reboot and then plug in the modem?

Is the usb 2 installed correctly?

There are two versions of the modem (http://www.digicom.it/english/techsupp/winXP.htm) Maybe it is unhappy in a usb 2 port?

I've tried to connect the modem to another PC, OS Win 2k, and it works
I've installed Win 2k on my PC, and the modem works fine.
Tried to connect the modem to any of my 6 USB ports in Win Xp and it does'nt works at all. Tried also to install a new motherboard bios, no way.

So I decided to surf using Win 2k, but the reason why my modem does'nt works in Xp enviroment is still unknown.
I would like to fix this problem because I've bought my copy of XP, while Win 2k is a copy...

Have you considered contacting the company that makes it? How about asking your isp?

Can we say in xp that these are known working usb ports, I know they work 'good' in 2k but can we say the same in xp ? Also can we say that with a device of the same usb standard ?

The evidence thus far points to the ports not working in xp for whatever reason ... have we tested the modem with another xp machine ?

I've contacted Modem's Customer Service and they told 'there is not known incompatibility between our modem and Xp'.
In XP, all USB ports seems to work fine: I own a Logitech USB Mouse and it works connetcted to any port, so a Philips Web Camera..
More strange, XP refuse to install any driver for this unsupported device, even if I try to force it....

If you go into safe mode, (press f8 on start up) go to device manager, view hidden devices... are there any devices that "belong" to the usb modem? Delete these if found. Then go to add/remove programs still in safe mode and see if the usb drivers can be uninstalled here.

Boot to normal mode without the usb modem connected. Install the drivers and do not connect the usb modem unless the drivers ask you to. Reboot and reconnect the usb modem.

You can't really do it this way around ... The USB device 'sends' its setup to the o/s ... The usb setup info lives in the device either in a chip or if you are really lucky an eeprom that you can reprogram very much like firmware in a CD.

Hi, still here. A new condition appeared on my PC... Modem is still an 'unsupported device' under XP (tryed anything, no way at all), while in win 2k still works fine. I've installed my Epson USB printer: in XP was configured in seconds, while win 2k refuses to install... Win2k detects an 'USB printer' plugged in, but refuses to accept Epson Drivers. The standard drivers package from Epson (last version) does'nt detect any USB printer...

I guess I have some problems with my USB...

ICH4 USB 2.0 Driver for Windows XP.Important! You need to follow the steps decribed in Readme-XP.txt; otherwise, you may need to do a new Windows XP installation to FIX POTENTIAL USB 2.0 PROBLEM.

Chipset INF file installed, last version from Intel. I've also intalled the ICH4 patch from ASUS (many thanks for the links you sent, I wil try with this files)...

The quote Noo gives leads me to think that this board doesn't have a phillips usb controller on it, but something else ?

XP (& presummably 2000) only have 'native' support for a particular brand of usb 2.0 controllers made by phillips .... there are also 'clone' chips made by various folks which purport to be the same .... these have exactly the same .inf file names but varying contents ... hence the warning ! To sort it out you'd have to, disable all usb controllers in bios, dig about find all the driver files, delete them, re-enable usb, & replace the driver files with the right ones, ... Asus are of the opinion that a re-install would be quicker !

Both 'issues' look like they'll be solved when you get this right ...
