Got a new Hp Photosmart 7350 printer. I'm running it on Win 98se. This printer uses USB. When I have it all hooked up and start my computer the bootup hangs just before the desktop comes up. Seems it is looking for the printer. So I have to power off then power on and let the computer go through it's Scandisk mode then the computer will go right through to the desktop and all is fine. If I unplug the USB cable from the computer. Restart the computer the computer boots up fine. Also if I then after the restart replug the USB cable the printer will be found and that works fine too.
Any Idea how I can leave this printer hooked up all the time without going through all these crazy steps.

What drivers are you using?
What motherboard do you have and did you load the motherboard drivers?

Latest driver available here. (http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwareDownloadIndex.jhtml?reg=&cc=&softitem=ps-10021-1&prodId=hpphotosma72886&lc=en&sw_lang=en)

Thanks my friend,
The printer came with ver 4.1 I uninstalled it and install the download you told me because it was ver 4.2. But I still have the same problem. After the install it ask to reboot your computer. Well then it reboots and gets almost to the desktop when it hangs like it is trying to find the printer. First i throught the USB cable was to long. So I tried it with a 6' cable. Still got the hang up. This system was made for me in 1999. They use a P2 333+ (BX) Soyo 6BA+ BX 6bay 235W
Motherboard. The system is a P3 500 MMX with 128 ram. Running Win 98se.
I can use the printer if I plug in the USB after I boot up. But like I said I can't keep it plugged in all the time.
Any more Ideas

Have you tried completely uninstalling all usb devices including the onboard usb in safe mode and reinstalling?

Is the printer on when the computer is booted? Just occured to me that it might be a problem getting the printer to wake up.

Have you tried the printer on another machine to see if it behaves the same?

You might want to read up on Photosmart Products - USB Troubleshooting. (http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=bpy01268&prodId=hpphotosma72886) It has some good basic info. It refers to a program called usbready.exe which should verify your USB.

Towards to bottom, it talks about your older USB controllers. You might (probably) need a BIOS update.

Can you get other USB devices to work properly on this system?

Just a couple of suggestions...Good Luck!

Thanks again for the responds.
Yes I can get other USB devices to work without a problem. I even have a USB 2.0 Hub that I use now and then. I try the print in the Hub and the computer directly. But no difference.
Matter of fact the new download 4.2 you told me about is messing things up on boot up. I'm getting some strange error messages Without the print being hook to the USB. Must be the 98se is not to compatible with this printer software.

To let you know I installed the printer software on my laptop which is running Win 2000 and the printer worked find with no hang ups. Must be a Win 98se problem which is running on my Desktop computer. I guess I'll have to plug the USB cable in from the printer after I boot up my Win 98 when I want to use the 7350.:(
