I don't usually like these things - consider them "clutterware" - but this one's pretty cool.

And it stops popups, supposedly.

EDIT (Dec. 30, 2003): New download link: http://toolbar.google.com/ (http://toolbar.google.com/)
It's now part of all my new installs. http://forums.windrivers.com/images/smilies/thumbs.gif

here's the link (http://toolbar.google.com/index-beta.php)(adept's is missing the .php part) to the Googlebar that does have the pop-up blocker. it's in beta so don't be surprised if it destroys your system:eek: :D

don't need another toolbar here, but that's just my tastes.

but I will use the google search instead of the default IE as detailed here (http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/windowstips/story/0,24330,3370170,00.html) oh and choose 'the lazy way' :D

The only way to surf the internet for me :D I have been using it since it came out and I have forgotten that it is not an actual part of my Browser.

The beta version rocks, the popup blocker works great, i prefer it to any of the other popup blockers i have used.

I used the google tool bar before the new beta, and find that the new beta is a god send. not only do i retain my normal functionality, it blocks everything i want it to

I've used the toolbar for quite awhile now. I even did the distributed computing project, too, although I turned that off pretty quickly.

One thing that's come up on one particular installation of Windows 2000 I have is, after having typed something into the bar, IE will start grabbing RAM until the system runs out of VM.

It's a very intermittent, minor irritant. Maybe I need to update. Maybe it's conflicting with another BHO. Not sure.

I'll pick on Doc then, he's an understanding fellow ;) .... What about all those 'autocompletes' & the 'advanced' features which appear to be tracking my googling ? Is the first not a security risk just like IEs 'autocomplete' ... & the second is obviously not good (I know you can turn it off, but then I can't have pop-up blocking??) ....

I also find myself agreeing with the Computer Valet & saying from my brief running of it ... yup seems like a resource hog to me !

Everyone else seems to love it !?! so am I just being 'hard-to-please' ? ... no surprise there ! :D

I usually hate stuff like this, (weatherbug, gator, etc.) and never put it on my pc's but this toolbar is cool. I think I have seen one or two popups slip by and as of today 198 have been blocked. I don't understand people paying for pop up blockers that only work half *** and are more trouble than they are worth when this is free. Google is good and it really has something here.

I like to keep things pretty pure. (Not easy as it is running XP.) I don't like alot of tasks running behind the scenes. Call me greedy, I want all my resources working on what I'M doing. Google is my fav search engine, but I'll pass on the toolbar.

PS - Did someone mention Gator? Thems fightin words. If I find one more person here installing any of that blatant spyware crap..........well, root has it's privileges. :eek2:

If you are concerned with privacy, check the Google Toolbar Privacy Policy (http://toolbar.google.com/privacy.html), and know that all you need to do is turn off pagerank and the directory buttons by unchecking the apropriate buttons in the options.

I' ve been using it for a few months on Win98SE machines running IE 6.0. And, I haven't noticed any resource problems at all...but having 256MB RAM doesn't hurt either. Also, getting all of those stupid popups take up resources also...plus taking up your own resources by having to physically close those things.

I've found a good hint to minimize that tool bar. Go to View/Toolbars and then Unselect Google. Close all IE windows. Reopen IE and then go back to View/Toolbars and Select Google. It will put it on the far right of your address bar and won't make a separate physical toolbar just for the Google Toolbar.

One Problem: When you select Full Screen to get rid of all Toolbars except for the navagation buttions, the popup blocking feature seems to go away also. I don't like that...wish I could go to Full Screen and block popups also. Oh well...maybe somebody's got a work around.

Overall tho, I like it! :thumbs2:

You should be able to move the Google Toolbar anywhere you want.

Just make sure you unlock the toolbars in IE by right clicking on the toolbar and de-select the "lock the toolbars" option.

I like to keep my Google bar to the right of the menu bar covering the Help menu item.

Oh, if the Google toolbar isn't showing, then popup blocking wont work. But you can make the Google toolbar show in full screen mode, just right click and re-select the Google toolbar; then resize as needed :) (unfortunately, you need to unlock the toobar before going into full screen mode)

I hate toolbars. All of them. That being said, i've not only been using the google one from day one, I always add it on any install I do for customers. It's a free little touch that makes them come back for more. Google should give me a commission cheque!

I'm definitely a fan of google, but I haven't actually tried their toolbar. Since since you guys (and ladies?) like the search and popup block functionality I thought I'd point you to another freebie that I have found to be an absolute must. I like Mozilla, but hate that it has 'compatability' issues (actually because IE doesn't follow set standards), I found a mulitabbed browser with popup block, google searching and IE compatability (since it uses IE's 'engine'). Check it out if it grabs you:

http://www.avantbrowser.com

The only thing I should warn you of; every once in a blue moon when closing the program, it will peg your cpu at 100%, their working on this bug, other than that; you'll find it indispensable. (All you have to do is kill avant.exe in the task manager)
