Phone rings:
"Information Systems, Richard here. How may I help you today?"
"I can't get my monitor to come out of standby mode."
"Have you tried wiggling the mouse or hitting a key on the keyboard?"
"Yeah, doesn't do anything."
"When's the last time you rebooted the system?"
"I got your email to shut down last night, so I did." (That message was two weeks old!)
"Okay, I'll be right over."
Get to the user's desk, move the accumulated debris out from in front of the PC ... the power light is off. Push the power button and the PC boots up as expected.
"Gee, thanks. You won't tell anyone what I did, will you?"
"Nope, I'd never do anything like that." ;)
P.S. Yeah, I was pretty sure that was what I'd find and I probably could have just had him check it over the phone but I do love making managers feel silly in person. The look on their face is usually well worth the walk. :D

Oh no, this ain't MY manager. I keep her very happy - and in turn she causes me little if any grief. I don't need to worry about the other couple dozen bozos or what they think of me at the end of the year. :p
Besides, I share the best stories with my boss and she loves them as much as I do. :D

Technologically, not romantically. ;) Upgrades for her PC on the sly and all that. Perks like dual-monitor setup. That sort of thing.
Anyway, my wife is a physical therapist. She knows all the places it hurts and how to make it hurt worse. I would not dare to risk that consequence.

Sometimes Orangeman I would like to tell the users just to sit there for 15 minutes and stare at the screen look down and turn the power strip on. That should give me enough time to get a cup of coffee and feel good for the first 15 minutes of the day.

There are some users who 'annoy me' (well they all do ! :D) ... but when I 'can't take it anymore' (not without punching them anyway!) ... who I will instruct to power off their machines & wait ten minutes for 'cmos to discharge' :D ...
I once got 'pulled' somewhere & asked about this practice ... I was contracting at the time & answered 'its cheaper to have them doing nothing for a bit, than pay all the legal bills if I go too close too soon !' :D ... Since 'dumb users' are usually well known by their co-workers, no-one ever argues much !! ;) :D

I just spent 2 hours on the phone trying to get someone to download winzip....I failed, I am going to have to go there and download it myself....we get to the right page, but nothing happens.... for all I know there is a dozen copies on his machine... but no way of finding out.... I will now go back to hitting my head on the keyboard, it seems more productive. :D

Start->Run->winzip ?
That, of course, assumes that you can get them to do that :D

Let me tell you this....
On the phone we are trying to install the printer... the hp install file wants to put the files somewhere 5 or 6 folders deep so I say ok, change that in the browse box, just type in c:\printer
OK, says he - click next - its an error, I clicked back.
Right... says I what does it say in the browse box?
he says c;\printer
No, we have to get a full colon in there, two dots - ok?
Yes he says. Ok, I did it again, same error, I clicked back....
(me is wondering what the error is, but hey....)
So I say, tell me again what it says in the browse box
he says c;\printer
I say, I thought you corrected that? Try it once more...
OK he says, same error clicked back...
Does it still have a semi colon instead of a full colon?
Yes he says... ok I say, how are you trying to get the full colon ?
He replies - Capslock key....

Count your blessings. I am the designated "Coffee Girl" for the Finance building, just because the coffee room is just outside the door of the Batcave. I keep telling my boss that I lack certain essential qualifications for the job (like I'm a GUY not a GIRL) but she ain't buying into it. :D
Next week we have a new employee starting in the building, right next door to the coffee room ... and SHE IS A GIRL. I'm gonna try to sell her the "The newest employee has to take coffee duty" story. At least she used to work in a restaurant so maybe the quality of the coffee will improve. :)
