Can't get the wheel to work w/Intellimouse and notebook

Anyone have any ideas on how to get the wheel to work using an Intellimouse and a notebook which also has a touchpad? Both the touchpad and the mouse works ok but when I access the Intellipoint setup screen the options to turn on the wheel are grayed out. Any ideas???
