No sound card?

I am getting no sound. I have read or scanned much of the recent advice on this point on this board. I have investigated and tried many of steps of advice given others. I am the second owner of this computer. I am suspicious that that I do not have a sound card at all.

What I got back from belarc is:

So are those Yamaha Drivers actually sound cards? Should I go to the Yamaha site to download new drivers?

Well in truth, I’m getting about 1% of the normal sound. If I lay my ear on the speaker I can barely make out what is being said. (Truly, I am not deaf!) Does that change your opinion?

If I don’t have a sound card, how hard (on say a scale of 1-10 with 10 being very hard) would it be for someone who is nearly a newbie to install a sound card?

Your speakers need to be powered speakers. The newer cards are no longer capable of driving the speakers. To test this, if you plug in headphones you should hear a louder volume.

I'm afraid I don't have convenient access to different speakers. But I did try the headphone jack and got no sound.

The tiny sound is coming from built in speakers in this laptop computer.

When I plug in headphones I hear nothing.

Oh, I see, Belarc was not very specific.

I have a Toshiba Tecra 8100.

ok first up - reinstall the drivers using the toshiba drivers here (http://csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_dtlViewDL.jsp?soid=107042&moid=1073769806&BV_SessionID=@@@@0180017438.1065353838@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccgadcjifhkkghcgfkceghdgngdgli.0&ct=DL)


To load these sound drivers, download them and unzip them to say c:\sound (self extracting). Next ascertain if there is a setup.exe in the unzipped files. Now right click my computer, properties, 3rd tab-hardware - device manager button. Under the listing for sound and multimedia, uninstall all items relating to yamaha and soundblaster emulation (if any). If the unzipped files contain a setup.exe, run that by double clicking the file - if not shut down and restart windows and when it detects the sound devices point windows to the c:\sound directory and it should find what it needs in one of the folders. Windows is specifically looking for a file ending .inf.
