What is the toughest, most durable laptop available? I have a customer whos kid is constantly killing his laptop (physically). He has gone through 3 laptops in 3 years. The problem is that the school the kid goes to, requires laptops.
The latest one just got run over by a car... yes - that's right.. a car.
I'm sure they don't make a laptop that can survive that, but I'm looking for one that can survive rough handling.
I can confirm, from personal experience, a Panasonic Toughbook will survive being run over by a Land Rover.
(Don't ask)
Have you also considered a pencil and paper?

Here's where I ask...on a note of responsibility and appreciation for one's belongings...Why doesn't the client make the kid purchase all of the laptops that he has ruined? I know from personal experience that when I buy my laptops they cost me around 2600 USD a piece. (I have 5) That being said, I know that if I abuse any one of them I will have to replace parts for them, or possibly the whole laptop. I hate the parents that replace their childrens' stuff when they decide to find out what will happen to their laptop if they throw it from the top of the Sears Tower.
The best solution is a lesson of genuine value.

I'd just finished doing an outdoor gig (I used to be a DJ), and I packed the laptop up, and leant it against the back tyre. Got in to warm the engine up, turned the key, found out I'd left the truck in reverse. Didn't even feel the bump.
Since you also did :butt: , I'll pick on you Doc ! :p
Errr theses are pretty much a standard lappie in a lightweight metal case, I can tell you for sure that a builders trowel dropped from say 10 feet will pierce the case very sucessfully & lead to a barage of letters about 'suitability for purpose' ;)
Best answer I've come up with are the steel cases photographers use, much better :) - 1/4 inch plate !
We have of course considered Insurance !?! - if the school 'insists' then they ought to have some insurance scheme, 1500 kids, or whatever, sounds like muggers paradise to me, never mind the ones that just get 'broke' ....

I did a quick search: I don't have time right now, and couldn't find it, but I read an article during the second Gulf War about the laptops that the soldiers used. I even went to the website and checked them out. They really seemed impressive and REALLLLY expensive.
So, there you have your lead/hint, now see if any of you can beat NooNoo to this find.http://forums.windrivers.com/cgi-bin/wd/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

OC, That "ancient wisdom" was not meant for you. Yes, accidents do happen. But this child has gone through MANY laptops, and I doubt his is part of any war, and that he prolly doesn't belong to the local EMS team. This is a school environment.

I recall a TV show where the Panasonics were being tested (heat, cold, shock by being dropped), and the critics were just raving about them.

Believe me, if I were the parents - the kid would be paying for his own laptop right after the first kill. This family is loaded, and hey - I get more work when he kills his laptop, so I'm keeping my trap shut.
I like those toughbooks. I will definatly suggest those as his next replacement. If they can survive getting run over, they can survive this kid.... maybe...

That's like 120,000 pounds. I'd be impressed if a quarter still worked after being run over by one of those, I give that laptop a lot of credit now...BTW, it's spelled Abrams

I don't doubt for a second that he was there. The Abrams is a US Tank, he served under the British army. He may have only seen these in passing, and unlike commercial and retail automobiles, these things typically lack all manufacture and model insignias. He made an honest spelling mistake, that was all that I wanted to point out. I don’t feel it’s fair to call him a liar like that. Would you care to retract or at least apologize for your statement?

I apologize, sincerely to confus-ed!!!
I am inspired by Orangeman's apology to Doc.
I should not have been so petty and
...well, pathetic!!!
But, as many of you know,
this one goes back to the instigator of Fight Night.
And, many of my posts have been edited
by the one who sees a chip on my shoulder.
I do apologize for that,
for that is my burden:
to give as well as expect respect.
When I don't see it: I fight back!
When I am disrespected,
be it with wit or sarcasm,
I fight back.
And, it bites me back.
Irony, huh?
Well, I do have a lot of bitterness in me.
I have been used and abused to the point of
moving to an island to get away from it all.
But, as someone once said,
"No man is an Island",
although I try to be.
But now, I am trying not to be,
Hence, my joining this forum.
I continuie to have much growing up to do.
And,
with your patience,
I will continue to strive for that.

Well it wasn't me was it ? ...
I like many others come here to help, for free, we come here to help with technical 'stuff' because that's what we like to do, we can appreciate that folks might be blinded by techo-mumbo-jumbo-whatsit (I always am !), that they might need some impartial technical advice and now & again they might need some help or at least understanding in 'other areas' of their life ...
All I (& others here) would ask is that you don't throw it back in our faces :)
If you don't like my online personality, then fair do's (there's only so much you can translate of 'personality' to the written word - why I like my little 'emoticon' friends!) ... we can't all like everyone can we ? ... but there's no need or call for it all to develop into an ongoing slanging match, you now seem to wise to me (at least to some extent) so again - fair do's, I hope that's now behind us.
One thing I have learnt while here (among many ;)) is that 'flame wars' only cause the senior mod much editing duty ... (if Curt - he's the last 'top' mod - Sowulu {the sun god} - is reading this ... he'll laugh his socks off - I caused him much editing until I got that idea) :D
So you ain't alone ;) ... the secret is to learn :) ... you are aware of that, so hopefully .... :eek2:
As for 'fight nite' ... well it worked ! you kiss Ya_Knows behind at every opportunity now ... urrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh - I shudder to think :eek2:
Shall I do another for you & Noo now ? (there's only one winner there though, & it ain't you  ) or maybe we still need a couple of rounds, first ?
I sincerely hope not ! ;)
