Well I have finally decided to jump to XP. After using ME for a year, stability is a huge issue and I dont want to backtrack to 98SE. Since I am putting together a new pc, I decided to do XP. Any issues I should worry about as far as installing XP? Just wanted to know where some had problems like with service packs for instance, or common problems. Just want to be prepared.
Thanks

If possible download SP1 save it somewhere and Install it before you connect to the web with XP.

Thanks, this is exactly the kind of stuff I want to know. I will make sure and do that.

If you just bought XP it probably has SP1 integrated.
It should say on the package.
If it doesn't do as Shamus says, as well as other patches such as the one for MSBlast especially b4 you get on the internet.
Otherwise, for a new PC and a fresh install, you should be good to go!!!!http://forums.windrivers.com/images/smilies/thumbs.gif

I had bought xp a while back to upgrade my home pc but never did. So it doesnt have sp1 integrated. I see there is a SP1a available. Is this update pretty stable or should I get just plain ole sp1?

Not sure you can get "plain ole" sp1, not from MS anyway.
Read the linked KB article.
You will want VM so you should be alright with the original XP and then sp1.

What????
Are you kidding me???
Patches are meant to fix problems that were there when the OS came out.
In other words: when it was in beta and we were doing the testinghttp://forums.windrivers.com/images/smilies/wink.gifhttp://forums.windrivers.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
and found all the bugs and the bad guys found all the "holes".
There are some who won't buy an OS until it is at the SP 1 or 2 level and all the bugs are gone (well relatively speaking).
come again??

Nevermind, looked it up on Microsoft web site and found out that this was a known issue. Deleted some registry keys per the article and botted 10 times with no probs. Will always do it every 2 or 3 times so hopefully it is good to go now.

Ju Leon...
I just made the jump from W2k to XP PRO and I'm pleased with the O/S. I had been running XP Home on the better half's computer and my notebook but not my trusty, reliable W2k box. It was time for a redo so I decided to go with XP PRO... I find that once you lock it down, disable uneeded services and of course patch it up the wazoo, it's as good as W2k. I guess time will tell on my findings so far....

I also intend to upgrade my Win2k box to XP when I get all my holday upgrades. Also the latest WinXP retail packs come with SP1 and the new security rollup pack installed. I guess MS wanted to make sure that people started out with as few root level vulnerabilities as possible.
I thought it was kind of funny when I looked at the list of auto-updates I recently installed. Most of them start out with "allows someone to gain complete control" or "execute malicious programs" or something like that. It kind of makes me want to convert to linux but that is a can of worms that I don't have time to open right now.
