hi there , i need to run sfc on this machine , but am having problems.

the machine is a toshiba l/top with a (crap) external USB 1.1 cd-rom .

the cd rom expired several months ago (and i hav,nt got access to another)

the last time i needed to do a full reinstall , i used a 2.5-3.5 adaptor , and copied the i386 dir over , and ran winnit , for the installation of (most) proggys i use a 256m usb pen (and copy the disks on my main computer to the pendrive)

now when i try to run sfc , it asks for the xp disk ?????????

i have looked in regedit for install paths , and changed 3 from c:/windows/system32 to c:/i386 ,,,,,,

am i missing one of them?

any ideas ??????

cheers bev , but thats about another 400meg , and where do i put them? (dont be rude) ,,,,

on an 9x setup , if u loaded from c:/xxxx ,,,,then if u wanted anything it got it from there .

the i386 dir has the following sub dirs

asms
compdat
drw
lang
sys32 (which all the install paths were looking at ...but unfortunatly c:/windows/sys32 ,,,,,,,,,,maybe a clue there ?????)
win98mig
win98upg
winntupg

am now gonna try to change the install paths in the reg to read c:/i386/system32 ,,,, and see if that does it

anyone else care to help on this one ,,,,coz its gonna be a **** to reconfig as its a ntfs setup , and the main unit upstairs has perposly been left as fat 32.

cheers alan

OK I FIKED IT!!!!!!

d/loaded a proggy called system sentry from http://www.easydesksoftware.com/

when i ran it , it said my files were at c:/windoz/options/cabs/

NO SUCH FOLDER ON XP (to my knolage) , so i simply backspaced to c:/i386 ,,,,

and it altered reg setting ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and SFC Bloody well works now ,,,,

now delete the freeware proggy,

I,m now a happy chappy

We have an opposite issue in which SFC flags a file that is the wrong version, even though the actual version matches the version is THINKS it should have.

Disabling SFC has become a nightmare. I've done all the usual regstry hacks and it still runs. If you know any other way to severely cripple it, please let me know!

If you mean stop sfc running at boot ... This'll do it ! (http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/839/)
