Hi People,

Recently I have bought a new PC with XP Pro on it and wanted to start using my HP Photo Smart S20 scanner with it again. The original software isn't compatable with XP, so I downloaded the new version no problem which all installs fine.

The trouble comes when I connect the scanner via USB. It detects that there is new hardware to deal with and I go through the motions with the wizard, but then I get this:

Cannot Install This Hardware
"The name is already in use as either a service name or service display name".

I have tried every combination of re-installing everything and starting from scratch, but still the same prompt.

INTERESTING: Tried it on a friends laptop - everything works fine!

Any ideas always very gratefully received,

James

From a brief stab around in google and looking at an AirNic (http://www.smartbridges.com/new/support/faq_an.php) device with the same error message I may be wrong but it appears to indicate registry problems

This is a result of attempting to install the AirNic manually (without setup.exe) and then installing its software afterword.

Reinstall the airNic software would not install properly because some registry keys it needed to create were already created by the manual hardware install. Thus the error message.

The resolution: Delete the "AirNic" key from each of the following paths in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet002\Ser vices

After doing this a reboot was needed and follow the proper install procedure will work fine.

It apperars to be a Win32 - System Error Code 1078 (http://home.hetnet.nl/~ojb-hamster/EnWIP/EnWeb/html/erro9kq8.htm)but looking through MS KB gives no clues

did you download both the 70mb file and the small update? (http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwareList.jhtml?reg=&cc=us&prodId=hpphotosma10698&lc=en&plc=&softitem=Microsoft%20Windows%20XP&sw_lang=en&pagetype=software)

Thanks for your replies. Since posting I have found out that XP doesn't like having two scanners attached to it at once ( I also have an Epson flatbed). This seems kinda odd and I am convinced there must be a way round it, but for now if I unplug the Epson USB and install the Photo Smart software, it will work, but only while the other scanner is unplugged. Seems a little strange for such an advanced operating system.

Can anyone shed any light?

Yup ... its to to with the services needed to run it, xp uses the WIA (Windows Image Acquistion Service) to acquire images, this gets fired by plug & play whenever you add a scanner (USB fires this on every plug in or power up anyway) only one instance of this can run at any one time it may be set to run automatically at startup by the drivers, this isn't technically right, it should be fired when the device is used, but nearly all scanners load their own control apps which 'own' the WIA process(service) thus preventing any other app attaching to the WIA process, you can configure it all to work, but its a lot of tinkering ;) ... I'd stick with your 'for now' for good :)
