Can anyone help me with a problem - I've just installed the above DVD-RAM drive but Explorer cannot access it because of an I/O error.
The drive appears in the bios setup ok and seems to be present in Explorer and device manager says it is OK.
I have downloaded up to date drivers from Panasonic website and checked Windows update but all to no avail.
I am using Win XP Pro and Gigabyte MB.[FONT=Comic Sans MS]

Welcome to Windrivers adeybaby

First let me confuse you ! Errr you don't need drivers for an atapi device, so that's ANY dvd/cd 'type' device ;) ... but you do need s/w to support features other than reading. Panasonic seem to have 'extended' the definition to include the s/w necessary to write to the disk.

Ain't these 'DVD-RAM SW-9581' made by Matsu****a Kotobuki not panasonic anyway ? (bit of googling later, says that a company called 'orbit' actually makes the things, most of it in Japanese which ain't my strong point, which I think is a joint venture co between the two 'candidates')

What other 'stuff' in the way of writing s/w is there floating about ? (so any other cdr/dvd 'drivers' floating about) ... I've only ever installed one dvd ram unit which was co-incidentally the Matsu****a version of what you have, that didn't for whatever reason like the nero 'cdr/burning driver' - I needed to flash the firmware of the DVD ram to get it all going together, I also ended up having to make the drive primary master on a channel on its own to get dma working correctly.

So I'd try ...
1. removing any other cdr s/w that might 'conflict'
2. look for updated firmware
3. make the dvd ram be on its own ide channel & use 'PIO mode only' (if only for now) to test, preferably the first channel (this defeats bios issues, mostly!)
4. if your chipset is VIA most definately get & apply the latest & greatest 4-in1s (hyperions) as if your IDE drivers don't work 'just so' your dvd-ram has no chance !

That stupid bloody profanity checker is so dumb , I can type wank, bugger or tosser but if I want to type Mat-su-sh-ita it puts frigging stars in it!
