Hi, I just can,t get out of safe mode, the unit is a fujitsu lifebook, wins me. I replaced the hard drive from my old laptop. the system up and runs but I cannot get full colour only 16 colours. I have tryed to restore but no joy there. tryed changing setting for monitior and adapter no joy it just keeps going back to safe mode. I tryed to uninstall me but it will not allow me. I have connected to windows update and downloaded all their updates but still nothing works. I only have an A drive, no cd rom and the laptop is networked to my pc and can excess the interinet.
please any ideas out there. Its driving me mad. O one thing the old hard drive was taken out due to incomplete software package but I am unable to reload due to lack of cd rom and the fact that the laptop will not find a usb external cd rom I had.
Hope someone outthere can help
thanks

Welcome to windrivers.http://forums.windrivers.com/images/smilies/smile.gif
First in safe mode you are only going to get 16 colors as the driver for you video card is not loaded.
Second while in safe mode have you tried a full scandisk with the "fix errors"
box checked.
Third when you are booting up your system are you getting any error messages. These messages will help us figure out your problem.
Let us know what happens.http://forums.windrivers.com/images/smilies/thumbs.gif

hi thanks for trying to help, There are no error messages, the system starts ok, but only in 16 colours( thats safe mode I think ) I have run scandisk with fix errors around 10 times with no result.
In the device manager there is a ? on other devices, sub PCI Multimedia audio device, apart from that all looks ok.

Make sure you have audio drivers for that device with "?" and delete it. See if that gets you out of safe mode.http://forums.windrivers.com/images/smilies/thumbs.gif

He isn't in safe mode !!! else how did he manage to visit windows update ? modems, network cards etc don't work in that because as you quite correctly said earlier it doesn't load the drivers ;)
Its pretty god damn easy to tell ... it says 'safe mode' on all four corners & you get a little message telling you that you are 'there' before you can do anything else !
What he needs to do is update his video driver ! that's what is restricting him to 16 colours, as at the moment my guess is that for video adapter he has a device 'standard vga'... to check open device manager, open the heading 'display adapters' - post what it says there please.
All the drivers for a fujitsu lifebook are here @fujitsu (http://www.pc-ap.fujitsu.com/support/drv_lifebook.html) (pick your model) - once you've downloaaded & saved those you should be able to update your current 'default windows choice' to what actually is there but windows (whatever version it is) didn't recognise fully :)
Hopefully this'll fix up your usb issue too, your old hard drive had all this stuff on it ;) - we just need to go get it again.

Michael, go to where confus-ed links to and download EVERY driver available for that laptop and store in a folder you name "Fujitsu Drivers" for easy access.
Still I wonder: it being MEeeek, why wouldn't the USB drivers load properly?
External USB CD's are supported natively in ME.
Something else may be amiss here, but lets do this one step at a time.
And, welcome to WinDrivers.http://forums.windrivers.com/images/smilies/thumbs.gif

ok, been playing around, downloaded display driver from fujitsu web site, still no joy, but on playing around this message came up.
display properties. at this time display properties are limited to trouble shooting change only. and it goes on to say that once you have restated successfully you will be able to change settings.
I hope from this someone may be able to help.
this is a lifebook B2031, and the adapter is NeoMagicGraph128XD.
THANKS

michaelI don't see that model number at their site.
Anyway, this usually means the driver didn't initialize properly.
Have you rebooted to see it works right?
If not, you may have to reinstall the driver.
Let us know and if that is a correct model (perhaps it is another country model #).

Windows may very well have got confus-ed ... depends just what you did with the downloaded driver.
What you needed to do was to open device manager & update the drivers of whatever it had decided was your video card.
I suspect you may now have two instances of a video controller present in device manager, have a look & tell us.

OK, here we go again ;-)display readings
adapter; standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA)
monitor; Fujitsu 1554G+
performance set at none
colour management; diamond Compatible 9300K G2.2
I have no idea if any of the above are correct, bar the monitor which I took off the Fujitsu web site.
I have tryed downloading most things from the windows web site with no joy.
What I now is a small screen which will not go up from 16 colour and 680x680. and as stated the laptop once said it was stuck in trouble shooting mode.
I have checked the device manage and nothing was double booked. The only ? was on a PCI Mulimede device which I have disabled
I hope this gives you some leads,

michaelTry this:
Extract the video driver download in a special folder named Fujitsu Video.
Go to Device Manager and right click on the listed Standard PCI Video and choose Properties.
Then choose update driver and point to the extracted video driver download and choose OK/Apply.
Tell us what happens or whether there is some other problem.

Err what o/s is this ?
There's 'vga mode/vga failsafe' in xp which is kind of 1/2 way to safe mode, it doesn't load video drivers, but does others, that can come about if there's some kind of 'terminal' mismatch in resolutions and screen sizes, maybe that's why we are so confus-ed !
Please tell us just what video device is listed under video adapters in device manager.

OK update. I have tryed to change driver in safe mode. but each time the laptop goes back to standard PCI graphics adapter VGA and will not allow me to leave 16 colours.
would it be best to reformat drive and try to reload from new.
I will need to load a driver on for a CD ROM to load the programs on, but will I be able to do so from a newly formatted hard drive?
any ideas out there.

Since there was confusion on being in safe mode in the beginning of this thread, partly my fault http://forums.windrivers.com/images/smilies/sad2.gif, did you get into safe mode by tapping f8 key at boot up and see safe mode on the screen? And if you were in safe mode was there only one video adapter listed? Also look in other devices and let us know what you see.
confus-ed
December 6th, 2003, 06:25 AM
All that's happening is that windows doesn't know what the video adapter is, add that to our confus-ed-ness & .... the usual confus-ion!:D
So in SAFE mode (press f8 muchly at boot), remove the current video adapter, this is the only place you can do it without everything going black !, make sure there is nothing listed in that catergory at all ...
Retard (re-start, but windoze is a ...) windows & it'll autodetect a device again, hopefully it won't just piss off & find one & it'll allow you to specify drivers for it, point it at the downloaded files (we still aren't certain we've got the right ones have we ? We'll know anyway once we open the files this way) that should give you some device sounding like "NeoMagicGraph128XD" (which you gave us earlier), hopefully, he says optomistically, that's it !
IF it insists on finding a standard vga that's ok (the earlier confusion was because we weren't certain we only had windows seeing one video device) then you need to UPDATE the standard vga driver for that by pointing it at the downloaded ones (from desktop right click, settings, the 'advanced' button, in ME 'change'?, point it at the files, maybe a wizard fires here? bloody ME...)
Errr but yet more bloody confus-ed-ness .... earlier you said it was a lifebook B2031 .... THERE AIN'T ONE ! but there is a LIfeBook B2130 (http://www.pc-ap.fujitsu.com/support/drv_lb_b2130.html) (whose every driver are on that link ;)) I pressume you too are confus-ed & got the numbers in the wrong order ? You need to go through all that lot & install every one of the drivers - to get you cd working you need the chipset patches first, so that windows knows about the inards of your beast, then that ought to work, it should just find it ...

OK heres a update on laptop. I have been able to get a cd rom to work on usb plug in and have loaded windows ME onto the hard drive again.
But this is whats going on.
In device manager I have a yellow ? mark next to other devices, PCI Multimedia Audio Device. I have tryed to remove this device and reload new drivers using the windows me disk.each time it states that windows could not find driver for this device. There is no sound from the laptop, also when I change the video driver, and it asks me to restart the laptop, it just goes back to standard video device VGA and will not allow to change from 16 colours.
Could it be that the laptop is blocking the software some of which are copies????????
I have heard that windows XP will not allow copies of programs to work
may the laptop just be blocking the programs working completly??
I have also tryed to reformat the hard drive so has to start again but the machine will not reformat on the command
a:\ format C:
or
a:\ uninstall C:
PLEASE any ideas out there.

michaelFirst, the sound: have you downloaded all the device drivers we asked you to download?
Actually (sorry -ed), we need to do this all over again since you seem to have reinstalled/formatted/tried both...geez now I am sooo confus-ed.
The ME disk does not contain the driver for the sound and MEeeek doesn't know what sound card/chip it is.
So, we need to tell it manually what it is.
Same with the video chip/card driver.
Usually MEeeek does pretty well at id'ing chips and installing drivers, but that is not the case here, so we have to make it behave properly.
Could it be that the laptop is blocking the software some of which are copies????????
I have heard that windows XP will not allow copies of programs to work
may the laptop just be blocking the programs working completly??
You heard wrong.
These are not programs, they are drivers: software, yes, but only software that identifies to the OS what in fact it is and it's capabilities, so that Windows can use it properly and efficiently.
Next:
Format and Uninstall commands.
Uninstall won't work unless this was an upgrade from 98 and you saved the previous OS.
Format?
Well that SHOULD work.
Is that what you want to do????
You need an ME boot disk and you need to boot to a command prompt and choose "Minimal Boot" option.
At the "A" prompt, type fdisk first and tell us what you see and whether it alows you to do it, and then do format:
a:\format c:
BUTTTT.
