I am getting the error:

"Windows cannot find C:\directory\program.exe make sure you typed the name correctly then try again. To search for a file, click start then search..."

where c:\directory\program.exe is the program I am trying to run. This happens with all my shortcuts on the desktop...if I browse to the .exe file I get the same error msg. regedit, msconfig, cmd, from RUN, just about anything except IE and OE. I can't even get to add/remove progs from control panel...."windows cannot find 'rundll32.exe'. Make sure you typed......etc.

Housecall had found a backdoor/trojan in winampw.exe and after following the removal directions, I went to regedit to clear the keys that trendmicro (housecall) told me to clear and regedit wouldn't start. No I don't have system restore turned on.

OS= winXP pro

system=
AMD 2000
gigabyte mobo
512 pc2700 kingston
ati aiw 7500
120gig HD primary OS installed here
20 gig secondary
cdrom
cdrw

Network is working I can see and access the shares on the other machines
DL-604 router
win xp pro (problem machine)
98se machine
win xp home

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Peace,
--Dan

Try this in command prompt
%systemdrive%\<yourdirectory>\<yourprogram.exe> and see if you get an error.
You might have to do an in-place upgrade to fix.

Sounds like you are not yet clean possibly sircam.... (http://www.ctechs-fla.com/SirCam/removing.htm)

NooNoo you are a godsend.

It must have been a variant of the sircam virus, because the only registry key I had to edit was HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command and it had the winampw.exe in that key. I deleted that and followed the rest of the directions and the other two key were not present. I also had to change regedit.exe to regedit.com via safe mode command prompt first as well.

Thanx again NooNoo this is the 5th (I think) time you have saved my a$$. I wish I could afford to send ya something for Xmas ......maybe for valentines day <wink>

Peace,

Fixed the exe problem by following the link directions, I didn't delete a sircam folder but copying the regedit then entering that line did the trick. THANKS!! ^^
