My bro just got a new 3-com 2977 internal modem for Christmas and I am having trouble getting it to go, please help.

Its an internal pci plug n pray modem. I have the appropriate drivers for the modem. We are using win98se.

It installs itself on com5 irq 5. (there is no conflict with using irq5 on this machine) I can't figure out how to force it to something like say com2 irq 3 or com1 irq 4.

Problem is, it will not negotiate a connection with my ISP. I have tried several different phone lines.

Tried using "Standard 56k modem".

Tried disabling com2 on the mother board in an effort to get the modem to install there.

tried different pci slots.

tried removing dial up networking and reinstalling dial up networking.

tried removing and reinstalling.

tried using driver files from different sites.

Tried using 3-coms throughput bbs to test it, it connects for a sec and then disconnects.

My computer, different for my bros computer will connect at 56k speeds on the same phone line so I don't think I have a line noise problem.

We returned the modem to the store and got a different modem, it behaves the same exact way.

any other suggestions? any help would be APPRECIATED!

Thanks

heres an update...

I decided to yank the 3-com modem out of my brothers machine and install it in mine.

I put my modem in his machine (hayes accura 56k).

His modem (3-com with the problems, installs on com5 irq5) now works just fine in my machine, my hayes modem doesn't work in his machine.

if I switch them back, the behavior stays with the machine and not the modem.

new question, what sort of things in the operating system would affect the modems ability to negotiate a connection? any help would be appreciated!

thanks

HI.... I would check out your bios settings first of all. What kind of motherboard...ie; name and model number. Are you trying different slots etc??? Also, is the pci slot a shared isa?? Let me know. Jeanne

We have checked all the settings and all are good. I have a abit bx-6 motherboard. I have a 450 p3 not overclocked. I have tried several pci slots as well. Still stumped. the motherboard the modem works in is a abit be-6.
