hi i use winxp
originally it was just my liteon 163D that couldn't read discs, it kept saying no disc inserted, sometimes it can and sometimes not
this has been going on for quite a long time but i left it alone
but recently i've wanted to try and play dvds in it
so from GHR firmware, i installed the new one GHR8
and it hasn't helped or anything, still sometimes on and off
and all the time i've been using my liteon 40125S to burn cdrs and cdrws
and everything is fine
and then my cdrw can't read discs
suddenly my cdrw drive is no longer appearing as a drive
completely vanished
instead at the current moment my dvd is only reading dvds and not cds
oooh
can someone help me please??
i use nero v5.5.10.35
and i've been using powerdvd xp for the dvds

Welcome to Windrivers fun_mog
first off, make sure that windows xp native burning is off - right click the drive - select recording tab and uncheck enable recording.
install this and reboot (http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.html?sess=no&language=English+US&cat=%2fOperating+System%2fMicrosoft+Windows+XP&filekey=aspi_471a2.exe)
then go to www.nero.com and update to the latest version.
Now try.

thank you for replying
but i'm afraid the computer doesn't register my cdrw drive anymore
as far as my computer is concerned it doesn't exist
so i can't disable the recording tab

OK, look in device manager, (right click my computer, properties, hardware tab, device manager button) does it show up there with a ! next to it? Whats the error code on the properties for the cdrw in device manager?
If it doesn't, when your computer boots, does it detect the cdrw?

it doesn't detect in the device manager nor does it in the bios
but it did once today
and work and everything
but i rebooted and it didn't show up again

If the BIOS and Windows don't see it anymore (and you've checked all the cable/connections), then you may be looking at a hardware problem.
If you have another set of IDE cables, try them.
If you have another computer, install that drive in it and test it out.
Lastly, try another reader in the same computer.

I had a similiar problemwith a liteon drive.
I had been playing with Linux and when I booted into XP the cdrom was gone.
I was able to get an error code. I think maybe it was 39 or something.
Checked on the microsoft knowledge base and they had a fix for an error 39.
It was a problem cause by Roxie which I don't even have on my system.
Anyway, it was a registry hack and it worked.
We may be talking about apples and oranges here but that was my problem.
Hope that helps a little

thanks for your help
i've opened it up to check any loose wire connections and get rid of the dust
and now the cdrw does show up
but it doesn't read any discs
so i will try out the stuff that you guys said
if it doesn't work i'll just get a dvdrw
by the way
my dvd works completely now
thanks everyone!
