Hi all,
Just set up my home network to share our new Broadband connection. I have Xp home on the main PC, Win 98 on the other.
Right, used the Network Configuration Wizard which generates the NETSETUP file for 98. Once installed, I can see both PC from both ends. Great so far. Oh, a note on the settings - both PC's generate an IP address, I have not set a static one. Lsst time I connected I used a static IP, but as I'm sharing Broadband I thought it best to leave XP to set it up.
Now the problem is, the WIn 98 pc cant see the net. After much checking, I found its my fire wall stopping traffic from the 98 end. I risked a second to disable it while connected (daft thing to do, I know) and 98 can then use the net fine.
How do I make the firewall recognise the 98 pc as trusted when it doesn't have a static IP address? Should i just view the Alert Log, and add the IP address its shows as having tried to get through?
I have EZ Armor Firewall, which is basically ZoneAlarm in different colours, by the way.
I'm hoping its going to be a easy one to answer, but I just cant seem to find the option in Zones.
Thanks in advance!

Just explain to me how these are wired again ...
& can you tell me whether you require file sharing between these as well as Internet access ?
I'm sure when we have all the details this'll be pretty straightforward :)

What's wrong with a hardware router??? They are so cheap these days! Furthermore, you don't need a computer to be on for the other to be able to access the net.

Confus-ed - They are linked by a cross-over cable - if I disable the firewall I get access fine - just cant see the option in ZoneAlarm for allowing the 98 pc access to the net. I've looked in the Alerts panel, and seen the 98 PC ping XP, but even if I add it to Trusted Zones, it still wont allow access. I'm re-installing ZoneAlarm this afternoon - I think I missed an alert about the new net connection and its automatically blocked it. Been looking for the option to re-run the Network Connection wizard in Zonealarm, but cant find it. Uninstall / Re-stall should do the trick...
CEEBEE - This is the plan, eventually - but at the mo the PC's are used by my kids and I want the main PC to limit access - I dont want to allow them to connect if I cant authorise it...
If an reinstall doesnt fix it, I'll post back...
Thanks for the help!

Archer - I have a version of ZoneAlarm called EZ Armor Firewall - same thing, different colur scheme...I think its the equivelent of the Pro version of Zone Alarm...It certainly saw my network and Broadband connection ok ans popped up the wizard to set it up...and therein lies my problem...i canceled the wizard instead of completing it..

So do what you said in the first place & re-install & uninstall EZ Armor Firewall, if you can't figure out how to fire the wizard again... did you try yet ?
BTW you should be able to block out your kids pc with a router no problems, when you get around to it.

From the ZAP help file
Select Firewall|Main, then click Advanced.

Archer - many thanks for that - I knew it was there somewhere....
I looked in the Help file, but didnt see anything, perhaps because its a different version.
Thanks again, all....

Maybe you already know this.. Any decent router has policies through you can enable/disable access to internet using time, service, URL and keyword rules... this can be set different for individual client machines.

Just to let everyone know - a re-install fixed the problem!
Once installed, I checked that setting, Archer, and Lo, it was there. Something to store for later use, I think.
Many thanks, all, for the advice - we got it going in the end!
