networking the wireless way (help with..)

WinXP home, (dell pc) with network connection. it has a usb dsl modem (over BT line using Tiscali)


pc 2...

WinMe, (tiny brand) with no NIC...


client wants to connect pc2 to pc1 via wireless technology to use and share the dsl connection.

a) is this possible?
b) whats the easiest route (no pun)?
c) what kit do you recommend?
d) any further advice or tips...

wireless router by far your easiest solution. Just make sure you get a proper wireless nic for the far PC.

Wichever gives you the options your looking for really.

Personly i'm using linksys, however, I'ts missing some "odd" options i would normaly like to have (like support for incomming VPN connections).

Oh, mine supports OUTGOING vpn, I can't host a vpn server from behind it.

You're saying the WRT54G model doesn't support incoming VPN either?

Key factor here is that it's a usb modem. There are a few routers out there that will accept them but they tend to cost more. What I would do is go get two wireless nics (pci preferably but usb works in a pinch ;) ). Setup the xp system as the main system that is using the connection and then enable ICS (internet connection sharing) for the dsl. Setup the wireless nics in adhoc mode (peer to peer). Should be able to do it for less then $100 us. Cheers.

I'm currently using the B verions

and i'm stating that, my router, even with latest frimware does not support incoming VPN, i tried everything, l2tp, ipsec, DMZ, port forwarding, you name it, i tried it.

so you need a router or a modem/router ? modem router @ maplin 1x usb out + 1x 10/100 out ,,,,,£69.00 A11AN machine without nwetork card can use usb ,,,,,,ok now the wireless or WAP + cards as nessesarry ...pci plus pcmia (for lappys) if needed ,,,,


http://www.cclcomputers.biz/acatalog/ do a full range of wireless stuff ,,,,i was gonna use a wap box @ about £49.00 and a pcmia card for my lappy at about £30 m,,,l


the maplin one would save buying a hub and a new modem ,,,,and a £6 network card ,,,,then fit the wireless stuff after..


tiz all bloody minefields ,,,,,,and akward ,,,unless u want to blow £xxxx on a modem/router/wap ,,,,,,still a lot of pennies ...
