hi my two drives are missing from my computer but both are recognised when I start the computer up, I’ve tried the Microsoft recommendations but when I went to the place in the registry there were no upper and lower filters, I’ve tried everything, the drives aren’t in device manager and I’ve tried to add new hardware but to no avail. I've also tried to download the drivers but they don’t recognise the drive either...

Help!

OKAY SLOW DOWN...

What OS are you using?
Do they detect in BIOS?
Do they appear in the white box before the splash screen appears?
Can you get to them at a DOS PROMPT?
Are they connected properly?...no lose cables
Do the open and close?

Do both the primary and secondary ide channels show up in device manager without any yellow marks?

if the ide channels appear ok, check the boot record for a virus

Disconnect one of the drives... lets just work with one device

What you can do or check....

Replace IDE Cable

Check in the Device Manager for the IDE ATA Contollers
Do you see any Black & Yellow "!" marks?

Check the resources tab on each IDE controller make sure there's no conflicts

Run a virus scan with latest DAT files

Uninstall any CD writing software

Do you have any Black & Yellow "!" marks? listed in device manager?

Use last known good configuration when booting up
press F8 before Splash Screen

Man alive this is hard work ... test the flipping thing works by booting from it with your windows cd

Go back & read that MS kb about upper & lower filters ... many times you are required to add keys ;).... absolutely no extra drivers required for any cd in xp.

The drivers that run your hard drives run your cd/dvd drives as they are IDE devices. Did you follow this mskb? (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314060) to the letter? Yes I know it says easy cd and you may not have had easy cd, but other things can cause these symptoms, just that easy cd is the biggest culprit!
