Have you tried upgrading the sound drivers?

Have you tried upgrading the sound drivers?Yes,if you mean updating them. I've checked the drivers and they are all working.

We had a problem with sound cutting out because of a corrupted win.ini file on a couple of computers. They were all running ME though. Do you have a backed up win.ini you could restore? (I'd recommend backing up the current one first though. )

When you go into the volume control properties, then on shortcut is there surpose to be anything typed in the "Start In" box? Cause mine is empty.
And I'm wondering if that's got anything to do with it.
