Well I've been working on this for a few hours now and I'm not making any progress so I thought I'd post about it.

I have a home network of about 10 systems. Three of these computer have a single folder that needs to be accessable to anyone on the network. In other words, I want Joe Blow to be able to come in plug in his RJ45 and have access to these folders without having to add him as a user on the serving system. I also have a c:\ share on this system so I can access my files from other systems, so I can't just use simple file sharing.

Well I have two of the systems set up already so that this is possible but I am having a lot of problems with the final system which I will refer to as "system-1".

On system-1 I have the guest account off, but not disabled. So you can't log into windows as guest, but you can share folders to guest. I have the folder shared to everyone with only read access, and I have added "everyone" to the security tab as read/execute/list folder contents only.

If I go to my network places on another system I can't see any of system-1's shares. If I explore my workgroup so I can see all the systems on the network and I click on system-1 it asks for username and password, guest does not work. If I map a drive to the share on system-1 I get an error telling me that the folder or network resource is not available.

I'm not sure what I am doing wrong, I was able to set this up on the other two systems without incident. If anyone has ideas about what I might be doing wrong please let me know.

Guest does not work as you have the guest account off.

From xp help and support
The guest account is intended for use by someone who has no user account on the computer. There is no password for the guest account, so the user can log on quickly to check e-mail or browse the Internet. A user logged on to the guest account:

Cannot install software or hardware, but can access programs that have already been installed on the computer.
Cannot change the guest account type.
Can change the guest account picture.


Where is this folder situated?

The folder is just in c:\"folder name"

In control panel-> user accounts, the account is off. But if I go into control panel-> administrative tools-> computer management-> local users and groups-> users, and then check the properties of the guest account, the account is not disabled.

What is the difference between off and disabled?

So the folder you want to share is on this machine with the guest account off?

I think you are getting a bit confus-ed ... ;) maybe Noo's 'loaded' questions are doing it to you - read this :)

Do I need the Guest account in Windows XP? Can I disable it? (http://www.petri.co.il/disable_the_guest_account_in_windows_windows_xp.ht m)

I'm confus-ed too... trying to figure out where this folder is on the network....then I can figure where to go from there.

No Noo ... I didn't mean you were confus-ed .. I'm of course confus-ed, its Locutus asking What is the difference between off and disabled?
That I think He's confus-ed about ! But if you say you are confus-ed who the hell am I to argue ?!
