ASUS DVD Won't Read Disks

I have been given a ASUS DVD Burner. Installed this into the IDE slot in place of my standard CD Player. The Device Manager can see the DVD writer and claims to have the most up to date drivers. I have installed everything I can from the ASUS website.
In the explorer screens, the DVD drive is listed as a drive, but expanding the folder it just reads "Insert disk into drive E:". MS-DOS can't read the drive either.
Is there anything I can do, other than replacing the DVD burner?

Since the system recognizes it, so far so good. Even though it is DVD drive, you still need r/w software and software that will also read real DVD's. So, try a regular CD first. If this was a Retail Box it should have come with Disks which do what I mentioned. Nero for burning probably with an Asus. So, does it read regular CD's?

Welcome to WinDrivers zog. What OS are you running, and I'd like to know if it will "read" a regular CD before we go any further. Since the system recognizes it, so far so good. Thanks for your quick reply. The O/S is Windows XP Pro. Yes I have tried a normal CD but it still asks me to insert a disk.

Any ideas?

Any ideas?Since the system recognizes it, it is probably hooked up properly, but just in case, did you go back and check the cable was inserted correctly and that BIOS recognizes it upon boot up? Exactly what does Device Manager say it is? Does it say Asus DVD? And, if this is XP, what do you mean DOS can't read it either. If you have the XP CD, have you tried booting with it. Let's just make sure the drive isn't bad first.

I am having the same situation with the same specs. Except for the brand. Brand is still unknown on mine. (purchased from a friend)

When i go into device mang. The reading it gives is "IDE DVD-ROM 16x" I'm sure it's the same for the above.

I have not tried to boot from the dvd drive yet. It should allow me to try.
