ok, get you NIC setup, and go into the terminal (like command prompt on windows) then type ifconfig (this is like ipconfig on windows)
you should see somthing with
eth0 and lo
if you dont see eth0 then your nic isnt setup right

"ifconfig" tried in upper and lower case gives "command not found"
Eth0 shows as the realtek in YAST 2 network card set up

I just set up a SUSE 8.1 PRO box but I'm using an external 56k dial-up connection. Some things to look for... See if you can specify your dns... Probably under kinternet ( or are you not using kde for desktop ? ) Another thing I needed to do is set it to "stupid" or "dumb" connection I don't remember which exactly... I'm still new to this too but like I said just did something similiar myself...

you need to jump over to your root account to run this command. to do so open a terminal and type in "su" (sans the ""). it will ask you for your root password (you set this up when you installed). Once it accepts your pw it will drop you back to a command prompt. you are now running as root. now try ipconfig.
one question though. are you trying to connect via wireless or wired?

Wired.
Tried it as root.
Have noticed at logon all sorts of messages like ifup failed and many more.
Im now reinstalling on a different machine, as the one I was having the trouble with had an o/b nic that linux couldnt recognise. Even though it was turned off in BIOS, and the Realtek installed, there were two NICS showing in YAST, the second being the o/b which it couldnt id.
Ive no idea why im doing all this, as I dont know what ill do with the machine *if* I can even get online with it.... 'Cause its there i suppose.

ifdown: could not get a valid interface name
ifup: could not get a valid interface name

ifup: could not get a valid interface name
why'd you type ifdown ifup?
type "ifconfig" and see what interfaces are listed.
If only "lo" is listed then try "ifconfig eth0 up"
if it gives you some error then we need to find a way to get the drivers loaded for said nic

As stated earlier, ifconfig returns "command not found"
The last message is the response to your last question.
Im not being arsey, just answering your question. I AM grateful for the help, honest!
I think the drivers are loaded. Theres something else awry here. Is it the cable modem? Is it a duff installation? Am I wasting my time? Is my tea ready yet?

ok so let me see if I understand this:
you typed in su then your root password. you then typed in ifconfig and it returned:
ifdown: could not get a valid interface name
ifup: could not get a valid interface name
This is where I'm getting confused. ifconfig will show you a list of network adapters that are up on your system. you can NOT run ifconfig from any other account (unless you are added to the root group in which case you are pretty much running it as root). Didn't mean to sound harsh just trying to understand ;)

No offence taken - glad of assistance. :thumbs2:
Ive reinstalled now on a different machine, and got online instantly. All problems solved and everything hunky dory!
The motherboard was from an ASUS pundit machine, with everything on board. I dont think SuSE liked it!
Thanks again.
