I want to connect my old comp to my new comp so I can transfer files over. On my old comp I set up a new connection with the new connection wizard. I went to set up advanced connection, then went to connect directly to another computer, then set it as the host computer. Then on my new comp I went to the new connection wizard, setup advanced connection...but then on the next screen the option to connect directly to another computer is gray and it will not let me click on it. ?? Any suggestions? I dont even know if I'm doing this crossover thing right.

CAT 5e Crossover Cable
Old Comp: Celeron w/ XP Home
New Comp: AMD w/ XP Pro

Thanks for the help
Andy

I don't use the wizard mode, but I don't think you want 'connect directly to another computer' I think you want to choose the 'workgroup' option

direct connection usually refers to a connection over a serial port or lpt port, not using a network card and tcp/ip. Basically the crossover cable is taking the place of a hub, because the transmit wires crossover to the receive wires on the opposite end of the cable.

there is alotta good info here (http://www.homenethelp.com/) to get you going in the right direstion.

Spot on Craigmodius.

You will need to setup accounts on each machine for each other as well in order to satisfy the security requirements of XP.

If you prefer to use the Wizards use the one entitled set up a small office or home network.
