Hi
Have just upgraded my TP 600 from ME to XP, and then updated all the appropriate drivers/firmware for the OS from the IBM site.
For some reason, the audio won't start (it worked fine under ME), but if you uninstall the drivers and then search for new hardware, it reinstalls itself fine and works, but only until you shut down and restart, at which point it won't start again.
Anyone know why/how to fix this?
Regards
Martin

Hi MartinS and Welcome to Windrivers.
Did you get the drivers from the TP600 list or did you specifically put in your seven digit model number?
When you say not start, do you mean you have a ! in the device manager? Or is there an event in the event viewer about this?
Did you install these drivers logged in as Administrator?
Have you tried logging in as Administrator and then uninstalling the drivers and then reinstalling them?

Hi MartinS and Welcome to Windrivers.
Hi NooNoo, and thanks for the welcome.

All the drivers for audio come with XP (Crystal) - this is what it specifies in the driver matrix for the model I entered (FYI 2645-450).

Yes, I'm getting an ! in the Device manager against only one item in the Sound/Audio section (am getting the same for COM2 as well, but that's another problem - one thing at a time!).
Did you install these drivers logged in as Administrator?
Have you tried logging in as Administrator and then uninstalling the drivers and then reinstalling them?
Am I not Admin by default as the only user? If not, how do I log on as Admin to see if this rectifies the issue?

Depends MartinS, to make sure type in Administrator as the user and use the Administrator password (often set to blank on pre installs)
Exactly what message goes with the ! in the properties sheet for the sound device, and exactly which sound device?

Can Try a XP driver from here, but don't believe that TP600 Supports XP..
Other option is buy a USB soundcard that supports XP or reinstall ME.
Will check out the driver site and see if it comes up with anything, but REALLY don't want to go back to Me! Would rather have XP and no sound than ME with sound! You'd think that if there were drivers available for ans O/S then it would possible to install that O/S - that obviously isn't the case!
Exactly what message goes with the ! in the properties sheet for the sound device, and exactly which sound device?
The problem device is 'Crystal WDM Audio Codec' and the error message is 'This device cannot start (Code 10)'.
I booted into BIOS (or IBM's version of) and Initialised the system, which resulted in the sound card working...but only until I re-booted!
Thanks for the help guys - I really hope I can get this sorted.

Will take it home and try it out tonight. Should i be convinced that this will sort it?

;)
Hi Daffy86
Thanks for that - have not seen a USB sound card - is it external?
I only have 1 USB port and link to broadband via it - I guess I could buy a mini USB hub, but am trying to keep the slim, light PC just that - slim and light! Appreciate your thoughts though.

Code 10 means it ran out of addresses that it can use.
Then way around this is to Go into safe mode and uninstall the sound and anything to do with sound then turn off in the bios setup anything you don't use, such as serial ports, irda, etc and then try a reinstall of the sound card.
If that doesn't work, turn off more stuff - even stuff you use until you get the sound going, then add each thing you need back one at a time.
You should also check for any bios/firmware updates for the laptop that you may have missed installing earlier... especially those that deal with power management and/or acpi.

Hi All
Had a go at disabling some of the unused systems (parallel, internal modem, games/midi ports) by using 'Thinkpad Configuration', but whilst flicking through the user manual, it states that the maximum RAM for the 600 is 160MB (32MB base + 2 x 64MB DIMM options) - I'm running 192MB (1 x 64MB + 1 x 128MB - where's my base 32MB?) - doh!
Do you think the extra installed memory is something which would cause the problems with finding addresses - would it be worth removing the 64MB and see what happens?
Just a thought....

Worth a shot yes, overloaded ram sockets can do strange things. It's always best to attack these problems with a minimum amount of hardware and all known bases covered.

I decided to install the updated drivers I found and it's all working perfectly, even with the extra memory and everyting enabled!
Very strange - but I'm a happy bunny, so while it's working i'm just going to leave it alone!
Thanks all for your help
I'll be back if I decide that the COM1 is an issue, but until then....

Thanks for that - luckily, I have no use for the modem as I've set it up to work with my broadband connection through USB, and you'd never catch me anywher near AOL! :)

Well, I just upgraded my TP600 from W2k to XP, and all the sound stuff worked fine until I made the big mistake and installed some crappy upgrades from IBM support web site. The sound device whatsoever doesn't function anymore, despite all the tricks I've been trying. So I'm going for complete reinstall, since there seems to be no other options anymore.

Which ibm upgrades did you install? This information may be very useful to others.

My TP 600 type code is 2645-510 according to the sticker and the upgrades were the following (not very old stuff as can be seem from the dates):
- Battery MaxiMiser and Power Management Features for Windows 2004-02-19
- TrackPoint driver for Windows 2000/XP 2003-12-23
After these two the sound device stopped working. Currently, I have no idea why it broke up and how to fix it. The most amazing thing is that it actually worked fine right after the installation, which was actually an upgrade from w2k. Could it be possible that there was be some old driver hanging around from w2k, which got overwritten afterwards?
I also tried following upgrade but it didn't really include anything sound device related: Windows XP Supplement Files 2001-10-18

Hi Olli
Funnily enough, I installed both of those upgrades after I installed XP on my 600, although I not sure if the sound was working before or not - I don't think so, but can't be 100% sure. Anyway, the XP drivers I listed in an earlier post worked for me - install the files and then re-boot - voila, you should now have sound.
My IBM Thinkpad 600 worked for about 1 year with windows XP.
But after installing a windows update the crystal audio codec and the com 2 didn't work anymore. F* windows updates all the time...
Thanks for the help evrybody, and have much fun listining music and porn movies!

Hi Martin,
I'm having exactly the same problem with the same H/W. What driver did you end up using to fix the problem ?
Thanx

Hi
I installed the attached and all is working perfectly.
Hope this helps you too
Martin
I can't attach the file, so if you PM me your email address, I will return your message with the drivers attached. Alternatively, you can go to the link in one of my earlier posts, register and download them yourself.

There is a known issue with the Thinkpad and not enough ports. For some silly reason, they have the sound system taking up a lot of com ports. i have gotten around this issue by disabling the Infared Port. i also check to make sure the serial port and the modem aren't conflicting. This usually works and the sound comes up!
