I am working on a Compaq v300 Laptop with win 95 installed. I could not get out of safe mode so I reinstalled win95 from windows/options/cabs and the computer boots up, the wallpaper appears and nothing else.(still in safe mode)..I can click on the screen anywhere and get a task mgr coming up and almost everything runs...but control panel etc amd all my icons have disappeared. On startup I do get the message Explorer caused stack fault in module unknown A 0000.00000003
I then installed win95 osr2 from cd-rom using madboot and I still have the same message....sure could use some help.. Thinking of renaming win.com and reinstalling or putting win 98 se on...any ideas

Welcome to Windrivers Legalegl!
Boot to command line mode or use a bootdiskette and check in win.ini for anything against the run or load lines, if there is put a ; at the start of the line, to stop it from executing. Now go to system.ini and look for shell= - it should be shell=explorer.exe If it says anything else, put a ; at the start of the line and underneath type in shell=explorer.exe
I would also suggest putting the drive in a machine with uptodate antivirus and running a thorough check. I would also run spybot (http://download.com.com/3000-8022-10194058.html?tag=lst-0-2) while its in there (don't forget to immediately update spybot after installation)

So next step then .. 'step by step startup' (since I don't think there's a bootlog.txt to taake advantage of in 95..)
Troubleshooting Windows 95 Startup Problems and Error Messages - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 136337 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;136337)
See if you can locate what stopping it, trial & error I'm afraid ...

Check that you allocated an irq in bios for graphics when you do ;) (99 out of 100 it wants one ..) .. if you can give me more symptoms on 'trouble with the graphics card' that's probably the cause .. when you do 'step by step' then what it calls 'boot a' should tell you if this is so, it'd be the first driver I'd be changing anyway, after chipset patches (if applicable) anyway ;)
What did you do that got it stuck in safe mode ? That would be most revealing ...

I ran setup from the win95 cab files in options/cabs expecting no problem to get new healthy drivers and got stuck in the almost safe mode. Before that win95 said that I had the correct ati mobile driver, but it never gave me more than 256 colors no matter how hard I tried. I changed the default driver to standard vga and there was no differrence in appearance. That is when the trouble started and I reinstalled from the win95 disk after that and the same problem. Still almost everything runs from task mgr. But explorer.exe and control.exe cause the same explorer message....and obviously no cd-rom drive
